As a tutor, I review previous test, quizzes and work with the student to see where the "disconnect" lies. Most students are very capable, they just need someone to explain the material in a way they understand. Some students are visiual learners, other kinetic learners or they learn by doing. During Grad School I tutored high school math and science students as well as college freshman in Chemistry. After Grad School I have worked as a youth pastor and during this time i have tutored numerous students from my youth group in mathematics and science as well.
I love teaching high school students and I realize that each student learns in a different style. While some find it easy to learn in the classroom setting, many need individual attention which is where tutors come in. Teachers simply cannot give each student the individual attention that they might need. Also, teachers need to be hands on in their delivery. Too many teachers simply lecture, which I have found very few students that effective learn by having a lecturing teacher.
