Certified tutor in History and Political Science/Amer Gov

I am a certified tutor with experience in Political Science/American Government. My experience was gained by working with college students (student-athletes and those with documented disabilities). I am also able to tutor History (both World and American History) and the Verbal/Written portion of the GRE test.
I teach by using analogy and also by showing where to find the answers. I try very hard not to simply give the answers to the tutee. My thought is that simply giving the answers does not build a lasting base of knowledge. Plus I can show the tutee that even though I may not have all the answers I can use my resources to find the answer.

My comments on tutoring American History : Through college lower division

I have taught internship classes and tutored statistics at the University level. I have tutored mathematics from elementary to calculus at a junior college. I have been a GRE instructor for the Stanley Kaplan company I founded, owned and operated the Idaho School of Professional Hypnosis for 10 years, teaching hypnosis and hypnotherapy at a professional level. I co-developed the curriculum, designed the teaching strategy, and was the lead instructor.
I use the Socratic method, meeting the students where they are, and using gentle questioning to build on that base. I start with the assumption that all children are gifted learners, and communicate that belief to them. It is essential to create a base of success upon which to build future success. I also spend time finding something to like deeply about each child; and discovering what the child is interested in. When an adult ta ... read more

American History is one of my top subjects! I am currently a high school History teacher.

I have been a High School History teacher for the last two years. I am well versed in many subjects but Social Studies is my passion. I can help with math and science but not too advanced. I am also a coach at the school I teach at. I think being a coach helps relate information outside of the class to content in the class.
Hands on activities mixed with some note taking.

You and your student have needs. I'm here to fulfill them.

I've completed high school and been accepted into college, so I obviously have what's needed for the lower levels of education, such as elementary students, and I maintained a GPA of 3.5 throughout my high school career, so there is a good change I'll at least be able to get the resources needed for your student to excel in the subject of study they struggle in. I'm very good with younger children, I've worked with them extensively for several years.
I prefer to try to be more hands-on in my approach to teaching, especially with younger children. I do know that their attention span isn't as long as that of older people, so I try to keep them engaged through short and interactive sessions.

A Little Bit About Me...

When teaching mathematics, I believe that over half of my job is social skills. Calming my students down, easing their frustration, and making them feel comfortable is over half the battle. It isn't that mathematics is too hard for most people, it is just too frustrating for most people. So my job is to set my client at ease and to create a learning environment. Once that learning environment is created, teaching is easy. I have worked with difficult students. One, who we will call John, has Autism, Schizophrenia, and vomits when upset. It was my job to teach John how to count money. After trying a variety of methods, we eventually found that learning in traditional environments was too stressful for John. So, we played Monopoly. People had been trying to teach him to count money for months, maybe years. Three weeks after I started with him, I took him to Walmart with a ha ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As a graduate from BYU with a BS in finance and composite minors in accounting and economics, I moved into the medical management field. Within 7 years, I had taken a medical practice struggling to survive financially to a 3-physician, 2-midlevel practice. That experience launched a career. Other business background includes general management of a hotel/restaurant/touring company in a resort town. Later, I returned to school to complete an MA in theater. Here, I taught theater as an adjunct professor. I have also written and published a book and several one-act plays and variety shows.
I have a unique approach to teaching because my background is both analytical (numbers and science) and imaginative (theater and literature). While classroom training is my forte, I also have a solid background in teaching online. This combination is particularly useful since no two children learn i ... read more

For the past 2 years since graduating from the University of Oregon I have been working full-time as Psychosocial Rehabilitator within the educational environment of various elementary and secondary schools. As a graduate of Northwest Nazarene University (BA, History, 2000) and Boise State University (BA, Political Science, 1995), was very much driven to academic excellence. My degrees have enabled me to learn how to read and critically analyze content and to determine the credibility and reliability of the information I receive. These skills have enabled me to make evaluations regarding the messages I receive from other people and the media each day. I am then able to make a determination regarding it's validity and how I might help a student based on those evaluations.
I have always enjoyed teaching and working with learners of all ages. I believe most people can learn and we all learn in a diffeent fashion. Some of us are visual, some auditory, some kinesthetic. I understand who to teach people in each modality by being firm, fair,a nd consistent with each individual. My goal is to ... read more

I love teaching. While I have also been a counselor and administrator, I managed to be able to at least tutor along the way, with a few exceptional years. I found that children were especially responsive to me, so I often found myself with elementary children (who, under my tutelage, managed to "catch up" an/or improve their grade point average -- often to their parents' delight). Since I love learning, children and teens "catch" my enthusiasm, and invariably get caught up with my honest excitement about a suject. Learning is a terrific discovery process, and mastery of data and sills makes one far more confident. My enthusiasm is absolutely sincere (you cannot act out a love for learning, without being discovered). As a tutor, I quickly find out the level a student is performng in (there are practical ways, even without achievement tests), and I soon am able to ascertain his motiv ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching has been a wonderful experience for me. I have found the student have taught me as much as I have taught them. It is a rewarding profession because the results of seeing a student finally understand what you have been trying to teach him or her is a great feeling. Through the years, I have had many unusual experiences due to the many areas of the country in which I have lived and the many different types of students I have had the privilege of teaching and developing a better understanding of the subject matter with which I have been working to help them develop the skills they need to succeed.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree with a major in Spanish and minors in English and French, I began teaching high school Spanish my first year. Since I married a military officer, we moved often, so I had a chance to do substitute teaching at all grade levels and all sub ... read more
