Coming from a family of educators, I knew from an early age that I would become a teacher myself; therefore, all the steps taken to prepare for my professional life have been to enable me to be the best teacher I can be. I received both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of South Alabama. I received classroom teaching experience at a local middle school and as a university instructor. I currently have an extremely rewarding position with the Mobile Housing Board developing, coordinating, and instructing GED preparation classes. I have always valued the importance of a quality education and have encouraged friends with no college ambition to start working on their degrees. I am not, however, an elitist. I think every endeavor is a learning experience, but there are basic skills that are necessary to be successful, such as grammar, spelling, and professionalism. My experience in formal teaching is mostly in college-level public speaking and coaching Little League, but I am a proficient and tedious writer. I believe that a teacher should be willing to do whatever is necessary for the student to understand the concept(s) being discussed. Students all learn different things in different ways. I have taught a wide range of students both in ages and in ethic backgrounds. I believe that any subject can be taught and understood in taught in a fashion best understood my the student. I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years. I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.
