Since I do not believe that proving one's self by test scores is the same as being educated, my classroom is a place of fun, laughter and enjoyment of the role story telling must play in our lives. My students read and share their book choices with others. I promote understanding the author and his motives as a lens for comprehension. In order to fully comprehend a written work, a person must spend time as a writer. I use the Kansas Sentence, Paragraph and Theme writing strategy to teach students to communicate themselves in writing and thereby more fully comprehend exactly what it is that an author does when he writes.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BA in English and a Master's and Ph.D. in German (Germanic Linguistics). I have taught English literature as a substitute in junior and senior high schools, college level German, linguistics, English reading and writing and English as a Second language. I have taught and tutored children and adult learners. My teaching experience has been in Germany, California and Minnesota. I also tutored ACT/SAT in Minnesota.
I enjoy teaching students of all ages, individually or in groups. I find the Socratic method most useful, and with children this translates into making the subject (i.e. German grammar) seem like a puzzle that, with some effort, can be solved. I think students are best served when they can discover these answers for themselves.

I will be a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Superior in just a few short weeks with my degree in English and Communications. I am currently student teaching as an English as a Second Language teacher through the Masters program at Hamline University and will be applying for my teaching license in March, 2010. I have extensive experience working with non-native English speakers both inside and outside the classroom. I also have spent over 10 years studying French and spent a semester abroad in France, so I am familiar with all the aspects of language learning both as student and as a teacher.
