I believe in a constructivist approach to education. Stusents come with prior knowledge of topics. My goal is to get those students to connect prior knowledge with new information. I also believe that there are mltiple ways that students learn. They can have multiple intelligences in several areas, such as artistic, kinesthetic, or visual and spatial. My challenge is to assess each student's learning style and then design activties that work to that style. EVery student can learn, and my goal is to facilitate that learning.
I returned to school in 2007 to pursue a career in education. In several corporate positions, I was responsible for training new employees in various store operations. As a person who is both respectful and fond of the English language, I feel that I have an advantage in opening lines of communication with students. Because my area of expertise is language, I find it easy to express myself in a way that a student would understand. An important aspect of teaching is not only expressing oneself eloquently, however; it is also vital to be a good listener. This is something I pride myself on. If a teacher cannot understand what a student finds to be confusing, then the teacher cannot accurately solve a problem. I had been a teacher for 12 years engaging in a multitude of learning styles and methodology. I spent 6 years serving as principal at all levels. I was Director of Education for two years and then served as Superintendent of Schools for two districts for a total of 15 years. During that time I never lost connection with teaching, mentoring students from all levels of education and continued to teach in the classroom at least once a week. I was an adjunct professor for two years at Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania. I retired in 2009 to travel and photograph the country, while living in and RV.
