A Little Bit About Me...

As a math major, I tutored my peers throughout college. While I can tutor almost any math subject and several science subjects, my favorite subject to teach is algebra. I have found that those who struggle with higher math, including calculus and differential equations, often struggle due to lacking a solid foundation in algebra. Although I have graduated, I still see myself as a student still learning. I take that with me when I teach fellow students. I try to make it an experience where we are all learning something together. This prevents me from just telling someone what to learn, instead it shows someone how to learn. During my years in high school I struggled. At one point my GPA fell below a 2.0. I learned how to bounce back by improving study habits and hard work and ended up graduating college with biology degree with a 4.0 GPA. I share this because I can relate to the struggles of school and I have the tools to help overcome that struggle. I want to share these tools with others. Children and adults learn in different ways. Visual, auditory, kinesthetic are three ways that people can learn, I happen to be mostly kinesthetic. I alter how I teach depending on what my students need and what the resources are. I do use a constructivist teaching style to do this. I do believe that a student rises to the expectations of the instructor. I also believe that the responsibility of learning should be increasingly the students as they take over their own education away from the instructor. While the instructor is giving over the job of education to the student they should still contribute to broadening the students knowledge horizons by offering challenges.
