My comments on tutoring Testing Skills : Skills required in order to pass nursing exams and NCLEX on first try

Previous nursing tutor at Dutchess Community College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Have compiled multiple Power Points over the years which explain concepts in simple terms and which have illustrations of concepts which will not be found in nursing textbooks. Unfortunately, nursing textbooks tend to be a faceless landscape which is presented to the student with many complex concepts. It is important that the student be able to visualize the concepts as nursing is all about understanding and not memorization. At exam time, students are normally assigned approximately 19 chapters of reading. The brain needs concrete objects to latch onto, such as pictures. Otherwise, the brain will be unable to easily retrieve one sentence from the mass of information which the student is required to know. French teaching experiences: 1. Spring 1997 / Teaching French through games and songs to Elementary students in an after school program call The Explorers (K-5) in Red Hook School District, NY. 2. Spring 2006 Tutoring French privately a High School student grade 10 for several weeks before her Regent French test. 3. Fall 2009 Teaching French for 10 sessions to several adults in Rhinebeck Adult Education programs. I created my own lessons plan according to the need and desire of my students.
I am flexible to the need of the student. I experimented different techniques like plays, games, music and video. I also created my own lessons plans according to the level and desires of my students. I also entertained them with my French cuisine. I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “bigger picture”. For that reason, I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student is not just learning by rote, but understands a topic within its larger context. In that way, he or she is learning not only how to solve a particular problem or answer a specific question, but also how to apply it to other problems in the future. I began tutoring as an undergrad student working for the college's academic support office tutoring math and science courses. After graduating cum laude with a BA in Mathematics, BS in Meteorology, Physics minor, and Secondary Education certification, I went straight into teaching. For the next 8 years I was a jr high and high school math and science teacher.
