A Little Bit About Me...

When I teach writing, I emphasize -- and ensure that the students practice -- rewriting. Not even professional writers get it right the first time. I also encourage students to enrich their writing by reading as often as possible. Young people who take writing seriously are preparing for a successful college career. Post-secondary students who learn to write effectively are more employable than those who view writing as a technical obstacle. One of the most common complaints I hear about college graduates in the workplace is that they cannot write clearly and get to the point. I view writing as an extension of a conversation that I hold with all students. We talk, then we write.

I believe I'm quite a good teacher because I'm firmly committed to excellence in academic work, but I don't believe in being pedantic or dreary about it. My own interests are quite broad, and I think I'm quite good at finding ways to make academic subjects relevant and appealing to each student's particular experience and worldview. A Little Bit About Me...

After earning my BA and PhD in English, I spent many years in industry as an engineer, quality manager, project manager, and technical writer. I have taught a wide range of subjects in college classrooms, from astronomy to information literacy and composition to professional writing. I am currently on the faculty at two colleges here in Maine and I serve as an editor for several academic and industry publications.
I love to work with students one-on-one from topic selection to final editing. Making the right decisions early in the writing process is critical to the paper’s success, and I have many classroom-tested tools and techniques to help students make the right decisions. I have always been interested in teaching others, in particular, teaching children with special needs.
