A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching philosophy revolves around the notion that students need respect, encouragement, and guidance to succeed in all of their academic endeavors. I believe the best way to inspire students is by conveying our own passion for the subject through out attitude of reverence for the written word, our knowledge of literature and writing, and our confidence in our own skills as educators. I believe all students can learn to write well when given a relaxed environment where they can learn to express themselves in their own literary voices.
As a college and high school English instructor, I have had the opportunity to teach and tutor students on many different levels. I have worked with those in need of remediation as well as students who are are in honors or advanced placement classes. I am an avid writer of short stories and poetry, as well as song lyrics. I am an excellent public speaker and earned an A in this subject in college. I have been told I have a way with words, and have become the "walking dictionary" for family and friends. I have published a book of poetry from beiginning to end, without the help of a publishing company. I also have experience being a mom's helper to two autistic boys ages 3 and 5.
I really enjoy kids and helping them to think highly of themselves above all. I do not have any direct teaching experience, however I have done many hours of volunteering at my former church. Kids take to me. I know how to talk to them, without talking down to them.

Over the past year, I have tried to extend my ability to share my love and appreciation of English and literature with others. As an English/Communications major, I am very knowledgable in a variety of subjects including grammar, writing composition and reading comprehension. Last year, as President of the Writers Forum, we spent several months tutoring as part of an after school program where we helped children in Baltimore write.
For writing, usually I conduct some exercises. The level of the critique and what to say depends heavily on the age of the student. For grammar, I would either find or create my own practice materials and we could go over whatever is necessary until I've decided that the student is making improvements or the student has succeeded.

Every student has something to contribute, and has a certain talent. It is all about harnessing that talent for me. I believe that every child can learn, it is simply a matter of how to help. I am patient, relaxed, honest, yet considerate. I utilize a discussion type of learning, in which the myself and my student discusses the problem and finds a solution to correcting that problem.
