If you need a chess coach, you got him. I prefers groups if

I had been playing and teaching chess from Kenya to USA for more about 18yrs. Chess is a game that make enhances thinking and decision-making. Just like life do, someone else gives you a puzzle and you had to figure out away how to save the situation. Chess is for heroes thinking and leaders- You can't be a hero where there are no people. It's about strategy for security. My experience and why I like chess is well-expressed in these words "Chess helps you to concentrate, improve your logic. It teaches you to play by the rules and take responsibility for your actions, how to problem solve in an uncertain environment." Garry Kasparov
I like teaching groups more than individual becoz group setting creates the perfect opportunity for perfecting chess (You can't be good at it without practice with the weak and strong).

More About This Tutor...

Always loving French, I majored in the language and excelled during my Study Abroad experience. Upon graduation, returning abroad for furthering my cultural awareness and perfecting my language ability has been my goal. While here I have had two English tutoring groups, and have learned much not only about how I learn a language, but whats strengths others have as well.
I greatly enjoy spending time with children, specifically seeing their areas of growth. Each learning experience is a moment of joy and excitement for them, and it is wonderful to be a part of that process. I am patient, flexible, and strive to make the learning experience as fun as possible, considering learning another language takes place best in an easygoing and laid back environment. The French language is one of my passions and I want to pass my love and learning to others.

More About This Tutor...

At Purdue University I took all Engineering degree mathematics courses. In addition, I took five statistical cources, three of them were graduate level. At AlliedSignal, I received a week's training to teach three day courses in Total Quality Leadership to employees. Over the course of one year, I conducted twenty four courses with a partner facilitator. One company I worked for was a supplier to Caterpillar. In the course of mutual problem solving, I was able to be certified as a Green Belt.
My teaching style is to provide several ways to solve a problem. Since learning is done in different ways, one of the solution methods will turn on a light bulb and the student will "get it". I bring additional materials and new ways to remember. Last fall I tutored a fifth grader in mathematics. I provided note cards for him in the various solution formulas.

A Little Bit About Me...

I achieved my BS in 3.5 years with certifications in Kindergarten and English for secondary education. I have employed multiple skills to teach many disciplines to students. My interest in Science and Technology encouraged not only students to learn, but other teachers to request my expertise. I have tutored many students, generally those needing special services, but I have also created strategies for parents and challenging work for more gifted students.
No person learns identically to anyone else, therefore I approach pupils from their learning styles. I engage them, finding out what methods have worked and get a quick generalized understanding of how they learn. I challenge students to their frustration level (Piaget) and modify the situation to ensure success with clear possibilities to expand and learn more and in different ways. Most of the teaching I do involves heari ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I usually employ a Socratic style of interaction, seldom answering students’ questions, but rather guiding them to the answer, or at least an answer, through strategic questions designed to clarify their thinking processes and work toward a solution to the problem at hand. Frequently, I might not know the specific answer to a question, and in such instances, the student and I will engage in an academic scavenger hunt to find it. This practice contains much value, as the student will learn the techniques and strategies by which to effectively ferret out material that may otherwise go unnoticed. I am less a teacher than I am a facilitator of learning, and I strive to create an environment in which learning is both successful and enjoyable.

I believe each student learns at his/her own pace. In a class room environment, at the college level, this creates a challenge for the instructor. I try to stress to each student the need to spend enough time outside of class reading, completing assignments and re-reviewing as needed. I encourage the students to work together outside of class. I try to engage all students during class to listen, share experiences and ask questions. When Tutoring, I am able to pace my instruction to meet the needs of the individual student. I am able to sense when a student is struggling with a concept and spend additional time until it clicks and the light goes on.

I have also spent several years as a full-time substitute teacher for a number of Northwest Indiana city school systems including Portage, Westville, Michigan City, LaPorte, and Valparaiso. During my teaching career, several teachers were happy to request and recommend my services for long term teaching assignments, including a four month assignment to a sixth grade Language Arts class for Michigan City Public Schools. I generally give an assessment to find out about individual student needs. When working with younger students, I usually plan a series of activities, and learning games to help reinforce learning. I feel that it is important to develop goals, and would work with classroom teachers, if possible, to find out more about each student. I am able to tutor math, reading, writing, and other subjects. I enjoy helping students, taking time to develop a good working relationship, in which students feel comfortable. yet challenged.

I have had a variety of teaching experiences since graduating from a small teacher’s college with strict requirements. I have taught geography, physical education, piano, keyboarding, and coached high school sports. Hard work and dedication led to success in my coaching career with a runner-up state title in girls’ basketball. I mention this because it shows I have a good rapport with students as I am able to motivate and set goals successfully. I also have taught all subjects in a one-room suburban school, grades 1-8. It experienced such success growing from 19 to 27 students, that we added a second teacher after the first semester. This all demonstrates the wide range of flexibility and experiences I bring to the table.
