As a student I was most drawn to the ideas of Piaget and Gardner. Their teaching philosophies made the most sense to me when it came to teaching. Piaget focused on the idea of play as learning. This may sound strange to some, but a child is always learning, no matter they are doing, due to the fact that so many experiences are totally new to them. When children stacks blocks they are exploring many scientific concepts such as balance, gravity, cause and effect and many others. When children scribble with crayons they are exploring many concepts of art and aesthetics. Gardner describes the idea of multiple intelligences. During my time in college, I studied both Fine Art Painting and Art Education. Getting my BFA in Painting allowed me to study many disciplines of art while refining my painting techniques. At the same time, I earned my degree in Art Education and have an Indiana Teacher's License to teach visual art to all grades. I went to school at EMU with the intention of getting a doctorate in Physics, to teach at the college level. I ended up getting a job in IT at the University, and found I enjoy this just as much. While a student, I volunteer tutored for the Society of Physics Students, and I tutor all the student employees I have when they are taking physics classes. I love teaching, and the students that I have tutored have excelled under my supervision.
I try my best to make the student figure things out on their own, by giving simple guiding questions or comments. I do not like to simply do the problems for them, as I find most people do not learn well this way.
