A Little Bit About Me...

I studied at Kalamazoo college, which was a liberal arts school that encouraged students to take a variety of courses. While, my major and expertise is in Biology, I learned about many different subjects and cultures through study abroad and course work. A majority of my teaching experience is centered around sports, as I played college tennis and have always had a passion for sharing my abilities with kids who want to improve their tennis game. I try my best to make the student figure things out on their own, by giving simple guiding questions or comments. I do not like to simply do the problems for them, as I find most people do not learn well this way. I am patient and empathetic, and I understand what it is like to approach a problem from the position of a student who is confused or unsure. I try to give them the tools to understand basic problem solving and critical thinking.
I went to school at EMU with the intention of getting a doctorate in Physics, to teach at the college level. I ended up getting a job in IT at the University, and found I enjoy this just as much. While a student, I volunteer tutored for the Society of Physics Students, and I tutor all the student employees I have when they are taking physics classes. Each student learns differently and it is important for me to figure out a way that works best for him or her so that I can instill the techniques that will help them throughout their entire educational career. I graduated from MSU in 2001 with a degree in Int'l Relations and Business. In 2007 I returned to school. During that time I took all the pre-reqs for the Accelerated Nursing program, earning a 4.0 in each. The classes included psych, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, bio and chem. I have been tutoring professionally for about 2 years now, but before that I worked with a lot of my friends and family. I struggled with ADD/ADHD while in school, and had to teach myself the skills to become a good student.
