A Little Bit About Me...

Over the past four years I have taught a variety of science courses, including biology, AP biology, chemistry, AP chemistry, advanced science middle school elective and a biology methods course at Eastern Michigan University. This vast array of classes has given me an opportunity to work with students from grade seven up through the college level. Not only am I certified as an educator by the state of Michigan, I have also logged many hours as an independent tutor, working in areas such as math, science and reading with a variety of students.
I love working with students and enjoy seeing them be successful. I taught for 32.5 years at Northwest Community Schools. Subjects taught Fourth Grade, Fifth Grade, Sixth Grade all subjects. Seventh Grade and Eighth Grade Science and Social Studies. Middle School Phys. Ed. 20 years Adult Ecucation. Subjects taught, American Government, U. S. History, Health Issues. I currently hold a Continuing Certificate from Mich. granted in 1978, and a Professional Certificate from Florida. I retired from Michigan Public Schools in 2006 with a pension, which includes health insurance. I then relocated in Phoenix, Arizona where I taught Fourth Grade for two years. I feel that children learn best through rich experiences with a variety of materials. Children learn better when instruction is "hands-on" rather than listening to a teacher lecture. The most learning possible can be achieved if variety of senses and "multiple intelligences" are stimulated. A Little Bit About Me...

I went to school at EMU with the intention of getting a doctorate in Physics, to teach at the college level. I ended up getting a job in IT at the University, and found I enjoy this just as much. While a student, I volunteer tutored for the Society of Physics Students, and I tutor all the student employees I have when they are taking physics classes. I love teaching, and the students that I have tutored have excelled under my supervision.
I try my best to make the student figure things out on their own, by giving simple guiding questions or comments. I do not like to simply do the problems for them, as I find most people do not learn well this way. I am patient and empathetic, and I understand what it is like to approach a problem from the position of a student who is confused or unsure. I try to give them the tools to understand basic problem solving and critical thinking.
