A Little Bit About Me...

I begin a lesson by asking a student what he or she knows about the topic. If they have any familiarity with the topic I ask about it and confirm or correct their preconceptions. If the subject lends itself to a real-world example or demonstration, I would offer this for thought. Finally I teach the core concept, connecting it to other concepts already understood by the student. There is usually more than one way to teach a concept. I take into account the learning style of the student. Written or diagrammatic methods might be more effective than verbal explanations. Pnemonics can be useful, but only if the underlying concepts are first taught.
Upon matriculation at Colby, I enrolled in organic chemistry and decided to major in chemistry. I continued my studies in chemistry and additional areas of interest, including math, government, and economics. Before graduating I participa ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a valedictorian candidate, graduating with a degree in English. My background in English is both technical, focusing on classics in British and early American literature, while my position as editor of the Sierra Nevada Review, an annual publication of poetry, affords me a creative grasp of writing. I am also the assistant coordinator of the Sierra Nevada Tutoring Center. During my time at the center, I have helped institute protocols for L2 learners and have instructed tutors on methods of tutoring. I have been a tutor for four years, and have tutored all ages, including elementary school children learning to read, as well as adults working on dissertations.
I emphasize meaning in my instructional style. Rather than, say, inculcate a formula for comma us, I try to convey how comma use provides meaningful structure to an idea, i.e. the sentence. In the larger sphere of t ... read more

Having worked with students of all ages in a variety of settings, I specialize in teaching science and math concepts as well as test prep and study skills. My mission as a tutor is to help students understand subject content while learning how to learn. My favorite part of being a teacher is watching confusion and doubt become knowledge and confidence. I believe that this transition of ignorance to understanding is the hallmark of education and my goal is to motivate my students to seek these opportunities.
Born and raised in upstate New York, I graduated from Cornell University in the spring of 2000 with a B.S. in Biology. In 2003, after a short stay in the biotechnology world, I moved west to work for an outdoor science school in Southern California. Since then, I have had the pleasure of traveling all over the country and working with a variety of successful environmental ... read more

I’m a graduate of Oregon State University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business and Marketing Education. I spent most of my working career in business, management and sales. 2009, I returned to my first love, the classroom. I’m currently a substitute teacher in the Washoe County School District, ACE Charter, and some private schools. I hope to soon have a full time teaching position, when a position becomes available. My vast experience of teaching children and young adults hasn’t been in a traditional classroom. The teaching venues I refer to were in the workplace, with young adults (teenagers) as retail employees and an outdoor setting as a Boy Scout Leader. I offer a real life experiences in my teaching methods.

I believe each child has his or her own style of learning, and part of the joy of teaching is discovering a child's unique way of achieving academic success. I believe a hands-on approach is crucial in mastering and applying new information. I believe all children have the ability to learn when they are given the keys to unlock their learning style. I believe learning should be fun and not frustrating. I know that teachers can have a huge impact in their students' lives. Children need to be encouraged and mentored. I feel blessed to help children unlock their academic potential.

A Little Bit About Me...

Statement of Teaching Style I feel that all learners should have access to the highest quality education possible. The object of education is to provide each student with the tools that will help them develop their individual talents. All students should be given an opportunity in a safe educational setting to demonstrate their talents. This opportunity also means giving every student a chance to show their full potential. Instructors must have a pleasant and enthusiastic attitude. Instructors must be accepting of all students regardless of ethnic background or other personal factors. An instructor should use a variety of instructional methods and delivery techniques to facilitate the learning process.

Having a degree in physics gives me excellent problem solving skills. Combined with my interest in philosophy I have the confidence to tackle any problem, boil it down to the basic question and from there show each step to the student. There are many different ways to explain math and science concepts, and problems. With the background I have it gives me a good grasp of the material, and this allows me to find the best way communicate that to the student.
During my undergraduate work I was a teacher’s assistant (T.A.) for two years. As a T.A. it was my job to run physics for other undergraduates. This included both the calculus based physics and non-calculus based physics. I also worked with an elementary teacher as part of an outreach program to bring science into the class room. Two times a week I would travel to the class room and teach the kids (4th graders) science. Having ... read more

As an MBA student, I constantly had to conduct research in challenging fields, write reports, train others and make appropriate recommendations. I have particularly enjoyed carrying on tasks that required teaching others, presenting personal research and challenging specific teaching styles. As a substitute teacher, I have developed my teaching skills and became able to adapt to the different educational level, schools, communities etc. From my professional experience, I learned to be a team leader, to focus on the delegated task, to prioritize and to reward results.
I am a parent and I understand that educating our children is a priority. Although challenging, I particularly enjoy working with children, teaching them as well as learning from them. I enjoy working with kids and teaching the things that I have learned. I am confident that I can make concepts as simple as possible, so people who usually have trouble understanding ideas in math and science may have a breakthough. Coming from a very competitive school like UCLA I have acquired skills in test taking which are very valuable and I would like to pass these on to prospective college students.
As a Biology student at both Saddleback and the ultra competitive UCLA, I was able to achieve high marks in all of the core cirriculum. Subjects I am very familar with are physics, chemistry, math up to 1st semester calculus, biology and biochem.I also recieved an A in every english class I have ever attended. I have experience tutoring at Saddleback Community College in Mission Viejo Ca., mostly in math.
