I enjoy coaching and encouraging anyone to learn. I am enthusiastic and enjoy seeing "the light bulb" come on. I believe everyone has the capability to excel, and I understand that there are several learning styles. I started by tutoring other students in trigonometry and calculus in high school. In college I continued to tutor other students in a variety of courses including general logic, chemistry, physics and English. I have an extensive background in physical sciences: BS in Chemistry, extended coursework in geology and a minor in physics. When my children started in school, I would go to their elementary school classes and teach basic physical science concepts. I determined class plans and did a series of activities with my son’s second grade class discussing molecules, states of matter, density and finishing with a discussion of geology. As a high school honors student, I majored in English and achieved the highest score possible (five -- 5) on the English Exam. In College, I pursued my interest in English language by majoring in Literature, with an emphasis upon etymology, linguistics, speech and rhetoric. My senior thesis on the poetic technique of Alexander Pope earned both an "Honors A" and that year's sole English Faculty Award. I later chose to attend a law school that was renowned for its general emphasis upon writing and, in particular, "plain English" legal communication.

I like to instill in students a desire to learn. It makes it easier for them to have fun learning and easier for me to teach them new subjects. My first goal as a tutor, especially in reading and writing, is to connect with the student and find a topic that interests them. One of the biggest issues faced by struggling students is that they often don't identify with the problems. For a struggling reader this might mean not enjoying the subject matter of his/her book, and a for a student behind in math it may mean not seeing a real world application for the problems. Establishing a good relationship builds trust and also inspires the student to want to learn.
