A Little Bit About Me...

As seasoned home school teacher, I have educated my children for the past 17 years. I have worked with all age groups from kindergarten through 12th grade, teaching and mentoring one on one. I have the experience of teaching all the elementary level subjects for four of my five children. I have also taught the high school level subjects to three of my five children. I started by tutoring other students in trigonometry and calculus in high school. In college I continued to tutor other students in a variety of courses including general logic, chemistry, physics and English. I have an extensive background in physical sciences: BS in Chemistry, extended coursework in geology and a minor in physics. When my children started in school, I would go to their elementary school classes and teach basic physical science concepts. I determined class plans and did a series of activities with my son’s second grade class discussing molecules, states of matter, density and finishing with a discussion of geology. I like to instill in students a desire to learn. It makes it easier for them to have fun learning and easier for me to teach them new subjects. My first goal as a tutor, especially in reading and writing, is to connect with the student and find a topic that interests them. One of the biggest issues faced by struggling students is that they often don't identify with the problems. For a struggling reader this might mean not enjoying the subject matter of his/her book, and a for a student behind in math it may mean not seeing a real world application for the problems. Establishing a good relationship builds trust and also inspires the student to want to learn.
