After returning to college to get my teaching certificate I taught 5th grade for one year. I then taught at a high school in Salinas, California for four years. As an elementary teacher I taught all subjects except science. I taught various history and social studies classes to the high school students including World History, honors U.S. History, Psychology and Current Events. I left teaching in 1992 to attend law school but have volunteered as a mentor on several occasions which has allowed me the opportunity to tutor children in both elementary and middle school.
I enjoy learning and try to pass along some of my enthusiasm to my students. While I have six years of classroom teaching experience, I've spent the 20 years since my MA in Counseling as a teacher and trainer for a variety of nonprofits. I have trained volunteers, developed manuals and curricula for children through adults, and offered seminars for as many as 200 people. I am a George Fox University graduate with over two years teaching experience in the French language. I received my diploma from La Sorbonne University in Paris, France after a four month period of intensive language study. From there, I worked as a Teacher's Assistant, planning and teaching a French Lab class held once a week. I also assisted in holding weekly conversations with students in French. I am most familiar with conversation, as a means of relating information and testing understanding. I think that a through understanding in any subject comes about when a student can recognize the important concepts, and how they relate to each other, and speak those concepts in words which they understand--while gaining the vocabulary and proficiency as each subject demands. Most of all, I am an interested learner, in a variety of subjects, and I am excited to share my interest with others. I have a good sense of when I am being understood, and when I am not.
