Math, Science, Writing, and Critical Thinking

During my time at Colorado College, I worked as a chemistry tutor helping my younger peers traverse the challenging General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry course loads. But because of CC's rigorous alternative schedule--where you take one class at a time, for one month each class--it's necessary to learn to pick up new concepts very quickly, I often found myself being asked for help in classes I myself was taking. I never minded this, because being forced to explain something is the best way to ensure your own understanding of the concept. That is why I try to avoid directly answering questions my students ask me, instead dropping hints and asking questions of my own that guide the student to their own answer, in their own words.
My favorite part about teaching is the moment of sudden understanding that you can see in a student's eyes when they've got it. The challenge, of course, ... read more

Tutor with 13 years experience

I'm an environmental engineer who has been tutoring for the last 13 years. I enjoy working with children and excell at working with children who might be struggling with comprehension or who have learning disabilities. I have experience working with children who are ESL or ELL. I have worked with elementary, secondary and high school students.
Make learning fun and everyone wins! Not all children absorb material the same way. I try to explore different ways of presenting material and working through concepts to relate the material to something that can be understood.

I believe that each student is different, and that the best teaching method differs with each student. Some students respond better to being challenged while others will require smaller steps. The goals of the students also vary, some needing only to pass while others need a solid foundation in anticipation of further study. I believe I can tailor instruction to the students' needs.
I graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Math classes included Calculus I, II, and III, Differential Equations and Matrices, and Engineering Math. My MS in Engineering Management included several classes in Statistics and Probabilities. I tutored middle school students 12 hours per week for two years at Ramstein Middle School, Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a question-answer type of teacher. I like to demonstrate, have them do, answer questions, clear up ambiguities, and then test or at least check to insure learning and understanding. I have a style of quiet, but firm expectations. I have a great amount of patience. I will do best with high school and college age students, and on occasion, with more mature middle school students.
I have been an "instructor"-teacher for over 15 years. I teach math, economics, finance, business, and management for several colleges. I have been a Boy Scoutmaster and merit bade counselor and have worked with youth for over 15 years. I have always been given very high marks as an instructor with many comments on my positive energy and help for students. I have an applied mathematics minor so I would be able to teach algebra, geometry, trig, and introductory calculus.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am patient and love to work with children. I believe that every child has a natural drive to seek knowledge. However, classes at school are often too big to allow for different approaches to teaching.
When I came to the U.S. I was very happy to get the opportunity to improve my English as well as follow my passion in researching environmental problems. I learned in multiple classes and my research group how important team work is in accelerating knowledge, solve problems, and share what I learned with other people. As a undergraduate student I had the opportunity to tutor multiple High-school students in Chemistry and Math.

A Little Bit About Me...

I began as an English major then graduated in Physics with honors, cutting edge research experience in both academia and industry, as a published writer, photojournalist and poet. As a result, I can understand why some very intelligent people who perform well with the arts can sometimes be frustrated by the math and sciences, and vice versa. I have previous experience as a private tutor and trainer in industry settings. I have researched alternative energy and biomedical devices so I can answer the question “Will I ever use this?” by citing real world examples. I teach physics, multiple forms of math and writing. I enjoy watching a student’s face light up with that “Now I get it!” expression.
My style is patient, respectful, fair and adaptive. The goal is to find what works well for the student, not take a rigid one-size-fits-all approach that a classroom may employ. I start loo ... read more

I love to teach people. However, I prefer to teach older students, such as high school and college kids, especially in math because they are often actually interested in the subject as apposed to completing their basic requirements. I am usually a very laid back teacher but can be very strict when the situation requires it.
As a mechanical engineer I have been doing applied calculus and physics since I started school. As an undergraduate I was a peer mentor to the freshman engineers. We taught the students to juggle both figuratively and literally. It was especially rewarding because I had been in their situation only a few years before. On my breaks from school I often tutored my best friends little brother in Algebra. I can honestly say that I taught him a semester worth of algebra (twice) in only a few days. I also mentored undergraduates while working for the NSF funded ... read more

More About This Tutor...

In 1975 I had been teaching tennis for the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department for a year and elected to attend a teaching clinic at Coto de Caza California conducted by the Vic Braden Tennis College. Since then I worked for the City of Boulder as a tennis instructor for 7 more years and I coached tennis to individual tennis players, mostly promising junior players, for an additional 4 years. After a short period of retirement from tennis, I took a job with the Bureau of Prisons in Englewood, Colorado, as a tutor in their Education Department. In that capacity I tutored adult inmates to achieve their 8th grade equivalency and I convinced several to go beyond that level to reach their GED. Working with inmates was a very rewarding experience. I also taught for Flatirons Country Club for a season in 1993, and for Devil's Thumb Tennis Club the following year.

I love working with youth and feel very comfortable teaching math up through calculus. My approach is to teach from the ground up, without any assumptions about prior math knowledge. Having been someone who formerly had difficulty with the subject, I can better understand some of the pitfalls that the student may encounter.
I am a recent Economics graduate with a Math minor (more than 30 units of math) I've tutored at Jefferson H.S. in Edgewater CO in 2006 and am a former Marine in the communications field with years of instructional experience.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from Fort Hays with a BS in Mathematics and taught for two years in Topeka, Kansas. I then returned to Fort Hays for additional classes and earned a MS in Secondary School Administration. Upon moving to the Denver area I originally taught in the Adams County District 50 Schools for one year. I taught in the Jefferson County Public School system in the Denver area for another 27 years. I was the math department head at Evergreen Senior High School my last three years. I also taught at a parochial school in the Denver area for an additional three years.
I believe that given the appropriate instruction in the basics, any child can excell in any field. It is the job of the educator to insure that the mastery of the basics is accomplished before pushing the student further. This is true in academics as well as sports or any other field of endevor. I have always insisted that ... read more
