I have a BA in pol sci from Wright State University with a minor in math. Since then, I have tutored at-risk students in various programs in San Diego. I attended National University and earned a teaching certificate. I worked in a junior college in San Diego as a tutor in math, English, reading, and social studies. I went on to work in the San Diego Unified School district as a teacher's aide and as a substitute teacher. I then accepted a position at the world famous Scripps Research Institute. Since English was not the first language of many of these scientists, it was necessary for me to help edit their papers prior to submission using extensive grammatical skills. In teaching/tutoring, I have an ongoing teacher-student conversation that resembles a programmed unit. I talk mathematics from a tutor's point of view and expect the student to fill in the blanks in a way such that I've set him/her up. What it does is keep the student's attention since they've to answer my questions and "fill in my blanks". While I was tutoring History, it helped the child understand the concepts of the battles of the Civil War easier when I showed a map and used plastic army men. While tutoring Math, the student understood the concepts of fractions better if I used measuring cups for simple fractions.
