Education has been more or less a family business. When I graduated with a degree in chemistry, I did not imagine I would follow the rest of my family. I ended up teaching chemistry and algebra part time at high school in Southern New England and soon added other adjunct teaching jobs to it. Now I teach at the same high school, a community college and I am a coordinator for an adult education program. I am finishing this school year and moving back to Maryland to start grad school.

I believe that students must be active participants in the learning process, rather than passive observers. Students respond best to goals that are both challenging and achievable. Unclear or ambiguous assignments are even worse because the students are apt to waste their time solving the wrong problem (and justiably resent the poor marks they receive when they fail to correctly guess what problem they were supposed to solve).
