Every child can learn, so every child deserves to learn.

I teach in the way of Scaffolding. I give the learner all the assistance they need until they no longer need it any more. I start by giving a lot of cues and help with each step. Then I slowly take the training wheels off and each time, I let them show me more and more what they can do with out the help. I hope to create leaders.
I have been teaching children younger than myself since I started teaching Sunday school classes and became a adolescent influence in my previous youth group. I new all along I was going to be a teacher. I have been tutoring my younger nephews since they are now in grade level courses. I have also had experience in the classroom as observing mentor teachers and assisting them in lesson plan creations. I will be enrolled in methods course this coming fall for my Elementary Education Professional Teaching program.

My experience is principally in marine research. In such, I have taught at three universities. Most recently I have been giving scheduled seminars for several years. I am semi-retired. My science background is mult-disciplinary. I enjoy most teaching ecology (both marine and terrestrial), geology, biology, physics, and chemistry. I work hard at finding a way to connect with the student. This requires that I stay aware of the hints that the student is transmitting so that I can present the material in a manner that the student can proclaim "I've got it". I also work with the student to solve problems. Another approach I use is to never answer a question directly. I always ask them questions in a manner that allows them to be guided to the answer. This builds their self confidence and allows them think thru the process to get at the answer and it helps them to take ownership of the content.
Over the past 15 years I have been a trainer for professionals in areas of process management and quality regulations. In addition I have 4 years of experience at the secondary school level teaching chemistry, math and physics. In addition I taught chemistry at the local community college as an adjunct instructor. I am Paine College graduate. I earned a BS in Mathematics and Computer Science in 2006. I have also tooken graduate work in mathematic and math education. For the past eight years I have also work or volunteered as a personal math tutor.
Teaching is something that is not meant for everyone. I am fortunate to say that my academic success is due to my ability to break down any material to a basic ideal and teach the materials in mutiple ways. The most important thing I do is make the material appeal to any individuals. Once these things are established, I believe student can effectivly learn and grow.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have learned through my experience that many people have a "math-phobia" This is usually onset by a teacher or incident from their past. My main objective when working with people in math is to break down those fears. When this happens, without fail, the doors begin to open and learning becomes much easier for the learner. As far as science, I believe that people need to experience science to understand it, so I am a big advocate of "doing science" in a lab setting or even at the household level.
Education has been more or less a family business. When I graduated with a degree in chemistry, I did not imagine I would follow the rest of my family. I ended up teaching chemistry and algebra part time at high school in Southern New England and soon added other adjunct teaching jobs to it. Now I teach at the same high school, a community college and I am a coordinator for an adult educ ... read more
