A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that whenever I'm working with a student they have the capacity to learn and internalize the material. I believe that the student can learn the material. My method of mathematical and scientific instruction is based off the Polya style of teaching where the instructor guides their students by questions and reviewing the known information. Thus the student's questions drive the student towards the answer desired. I find great personal reward when working with students. After explaining information and working on helping a student understand the material there's sometimes that moment when you can watch the student go from not knowing what's going on to sudden understanding. Moments like that make my day.

A Little Bit About Me...

I was barely 17 when I founded a one room school in the remote mountains of Hainan Island where I taught all subjects and all grades. Thus began my love of teaching. As the Cultural Revolution waned, I returned to the mainland and continued teaching while I finished high school on my own and earned a BS in teaching Chemistry. My career progressed through high school, community college until retirement teaching Organic Chemistry at the University of Guangzhou. In America I teach Mandarin language and Chinese culture to students from primary grades to soldiers. I am currently enrolled in a MEd in Mandarin Instruction taught jointly by universities here and in China.

More About This Tutor...

I love helping people and I love chemistry. I believe in using an inquiry based teaching method. What I like to do is show an example problem and have the student help me work it out by asking them questions related to the problem. Afterwords, I let them try to work a similar type problem. If they have problems then I let them explain to me where they are having trouble and we go from there.
I obtained a bachelors degree in chemistry from Auburn University. When I was at Auburn University I took as many education courses as possible. The most helpful class allowed me to teach a middle school science class once a week. It was a great experience that gave me the opportunity to write lesson plans, set up for labs, and most of all gain teaching experience. I have helped many of my peers with their struggles in chemistry.

I am very patient and understanding however I strive to help the student discover their full potential. I have used many creative methods to teaching to include relating addition and subtraction to yards down on a football field, teaching trig by building and launching rockets, basically connecting what needs to be learned to what interests the student.

I have been professionally teaching for almost 30 years whether it be swimming to five year olds or flying to heads of aviation organizations. Few things give greater satisfaction than sharing what I have learned with others and watching them grow as they learn. A skilled, dedicated teacher, with a passion for the subject, can get anyone to learn, all the learner needs is a little desire. It is my job as a teacher/mentor to explore and grow that desire. I believe in a relaxed, but disciplined teaching environment of mutual respect between teacher and learner where both can learn from each other.

Welcome! I believe it important to make any material a student is learning ‘realistic’. I am a father and understand the need for patience, accepting individual needs and developing a child's sense of purpose. I strive to present real-life examples that apply to the material being studied, and then focus on practice. While repetition (using worksheets or going over the process from different directions) is important, my goal is to explore the concept so that the student is capable of addressing the problem AND understands the theory behind it. I am convinced that any student can learn any material, provided the tools to learn, study and find resources. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Bill Adams

A Little Bit About Me...

I will be upfront, I was known as a firm, but fair, teacher. I see science as a field primarily learned through doing, and I enjoy performing science demonstrations with my students to help illustrate new concepts. At the same time, I expect students to attempt to solve problems on their own, as opposed to simply memorizing how I solve problems. While it is sometimes difficult at first, I find it gives them confidence to approach future concepts and ideas both in and out of the specific science course.
As a high school teacher, I facilitated the instruction of approximately 100 students in Chemistry in accordance with Massachusetts Learning Standards. Developed and implemented course curriculum for the Forensic Science course, including labs featuring gun shot residue testing, urinalysis, and DNA electrophoresis . Enjoy working with people of all ages who want to learn. Tend to use the Socrates style of asking questions and building on the student's response. Try to use real world examples that the student can relate to. I am patient, easy going, and considerate. Try to use some humor to put or keep the student at ease. A relaxed student will probably learn more.

As a tutor, I work through problems/passages with a student to determine weak points to address and to find ways for the student to connect with the subject matter. Once I determine a student’s interests and academic strengths, I present new concepts in ways that make more sense to the student and hopefully interest him or her more. Because many students falter due to lack of motivation, I also believe that it is vital to a student’s continued success to explain how an understanding of the subjects he/she is studying will allow him/her to reach goals for high school, college, and beyond. My ultimate goal is to help a student come to regard academic success as something of which he or she is capable.
