Teaching is a difficult task. Everyone learns at a different pace and on their own level. Some students are quick learners and their teacher only needs to go over the lesson once; other students need to hear the subject content in a different form to understand it. Having said that, I can't explain my teaching style as a cut and dry formula. The skill level of each student and the way they process information will determine how I will present them with questions and explanations. I try to tailor my style to the student. Each student I had tutored when I was in college I had basically spoke with them, got to learn what they strong points were, their weaknesses, and areas that needed more base learning. I tailored lesson plans to help fill in their educational gaps, created small weekly assignments, and also helped with their current homework/lesson plan. I believe everyone learns in different ways. Some are more visual, others are more auditory so I tried to not only explain but also show by using whatever tools necessary/applicable (graphs, pictures, charts, etc.)

In my experiences, I have found the best way to fascilitate the learning of mathematics is through visual instruction via a whiteboard and/or blackboard. After the student sees an example of a problem done, I like to sit down with the tutee and have them walk me through the problems to make sure they have a good understanding of both the way to do the problem as well as a stron conceptual understanding of the material.
I have tutored at a Learning Center at Shippensburg University for the past two years.
