A Little Bit About Me...

Each of us has his or her own learning style. I prefer to parallel the student's own interests with the topic taught in order to best engage their enthusiasm and enhance their understanding of the subject I am teaching. I believe in the value of individualism and the student's unique gifts. However, how one would teach grammar is radically different from how one would teach drawing. With drawing, one teaches the method while encouraging individual creativity, maintaining a right-brained perspective; grammar and literature require a more rigorous approach since they are governed by rules and formulas, maintaing a left-brained standard. A little bit of humor greases the wheels of learning as well.

I enjoy helping children master elementary skills that are the building blocks to their reading comprehension and finding ways to encourage them to read more books and to realize the significance of expressing themselves through writing. I enjoy finding the best way that each student learns (visual, auditory, or 'doing'). I also feel like I am able to help give my students self-confidence in their ability to ask questions and reach their goals.

In 2006 I attended Pacific Lutheran University earning my masters degree in educational leadership with endorsements in special education, reading, and elementary education. After graduate school, I found a job in a middle school EBD classroom. Here I designed my own behavior management program, managed education plans, and created lessons that were exciting and engaging for my students. I worked in this classroom for 2 years.
