I strongly support the belief that all children are capable of learning if given sufficient opportunity. As a classroom teacher often facing as many as 37 students at one time, it was difficult to provide the appropriate learning environment for many of these children's needs. Through small group tutoring, however, the right learning environment can be created if the tutor fosters a positive relationship with the student. Developing such a relationship requires considerable patience and consistency on the part of the tutor. Personally, I am dyslexic and despite my learning differences I was able to attend law school and pass the South Carolina Bar exam. During my first year of teaching I was disappointed to learn how little time and energy is given to students who learn differently. My second year I choose to work at the John de la Howe School for at-risk youth and I loved every minute of that year: the school was designed to teach students with learning differences and behavioral issues.
