My comments on tutoring ACT : I have trained students to improve scores on the ACT. I perform well on standardized tests.

I was the Director of the Math and Science Lab at Volunteer State Community College for over twenty years. I taught and tutored the students in all of the college's math and science classes. I have worked with mathematics subjects from Basic Math to Differential Equations, including Statistics. ACT is one of my top subjects! I work with many high school juniors - including athletes - that often score a composite of 30 or above the very first time they take the ACT after completing ACT prep with me. I prepare students for all four sections of the new, STEM-focused ACT. Several of my students have earned full ride scholarships to their chosen college based on their ACT scores. I have been designing and teaching ACT prep courses since 1997. I tutor in person and online using the Wyzant platform.

It is very important to assess what the student already knows and the level of understanding they hold at the beginning. It is also important to make sure that what they know is correct and that they are not confused or misunderstanding the material. After which, getting to know the individual style of learning for each student will insure that time is used efficiently and that the student is understanding and retaining the material being taught. Working one-on-one is the best teaching method; however, when that is not possible, working in small groups is also very effective.
