As a Training Coordinator for service-learning projects throughout Florida, I learned about the effectiveness of service-learning strategies. The opportunity to apply what is learned in classroom settings promotes retention of all subjects. In one project, students learned about homelessness in Palm Beach County, Florida and throughout the United States. Students empowered themselves when they spearheaded a food drive and conducted an assessment of homeless people in Palm Beach County. This process enriched their empathy for people in need. I am a mother of two school age children with entirely different learning styles and a college graduate who has tutored friends and family for the past 14 years. I believe that learning is an enjoyable process. I have tutored math, reading and writing from elementary school level to college level Algebra. I graduated from Florida State University in 2004 with a B.A. in Spanish and Italian with a minor in French. I have been tutoring with the Modern Language Department since 2001 and tutor in all three languages. I also spent a month in Spain teaching English to native Spanish speakers. As an undergraduate, I was involved with the America Reads program, where I was a reading coach/language arts tutor to elementary and middle school children. I am also qualified in tutoring basic math and college prep math.
As a teacher/tutor, I find that being a good listener and paying attention to students needs creates a successful learning environment. Every child acquires information differently and their ways of learning should be respected.
