I have many volunteer hours stacked up working with groups of children, but I would love to teach on a more personal basis to build my one-on-one skills. I'm currently an education major at Colorado State University, and while music is my emphasis, I was always very studious in school and am well-versed in other subjects. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.
