As a teacher’s assistant for photography in high school, I realized that I had a natural aptitude for teaching and breaking subjects down into manageable parts. In college, I was the person that other students came to for guidance with difficult topics, from mathematical equations to evolutionary theory. Since I earned my BS in wildlife biology, I have taught in many capacities, including as a substitute teacher and as a trainer for new employees. I’ve never bought into the argument that some kids just can’t do math. There is plenty of truth that some learn math much quicker and easier than others, but with a good work ethic and plenty of encouragement all kids are capable of learning these sciences. I feel the most important thing to do as a teacher is to stay positive, and try to somehow relate the math problems to real life situations. When correcting a student, it’s vital to carefully choose your words, for a harsh response will demoralize the student’s spirit and desire to learn.
