Give the brain what it wants!

From age seven, I have had a passion for teaching and public speaking. I am involved with a continuing education program that hones speaking and teaching ability. In high school, I helped to pilot and served as captain of the Speech and Debate team (National Forensics League). I also worked as a Teacher Cadet. I took four years to volunteer at an educational center after high school where I completed an advanced course in public speaking. I was a full-time volunteer minister for 15 years total, and I dedicated much time to working with troubled and at-risk youths. For a year, I volunteered with Lapsits for Literacy. I have experience teaching in English and Spanish, and I have certificates to teach English and Spanish to speakers of other languages from the highly regarded Canadian Institute of English.
ACTIVE!!! The focus is on FUN and changing gears. The brain wants activity. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always wanted to teach but enjoyed the research that was available working for a large chemical company. I had the opportunity to teach Organic while I was working and enjoyed it but the time constraints were tough. I am now retired from industry and will be teaching in the Chemistry Department at the University of West Florida. I am very enthusiastic about chemistry and that comes through in my teaching and tutoring. I have made a very good living doing something I love to do and that is reflected in my teaching style.
After finishing my PhD I went to work for Monsanto as an organic analytical chemist. My speciality was the use of mass spectrometry to understand organic chemical reactions and the products and impurities that were formed. While working for Monsanto I also taught College chemistry classes (Organic I and II and the labs). I have over forty publications and for ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and history. I believe that anybody can learn anything. I think if someone has not learned something it is because someone has not taught it to them at all or they have not been taught in the right way. I believe anyone can reach a high education level if they are nurtured by educators who believe in them and are patient.
At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga I received an excellent education where I got my BA in History with a minor in Sociology. There I was taught by excellent professors who instilled in me passions for history, sociology, and intellectual discussion. I also wrote many papers which have given me good grammatical skills. I also gave many speeches and took part in many discussions which have given me good speaking skills. I want to apply this education and experience by working as a tutor for you.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate from Virginia Tech with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in Elementary Education, I strive towards achieving academic excellence. I have learned various teaching methods to help children better understand the subject matter that is challenging them. I have worked with many Elementary school children in Math, English, and Science. I also received 3 minors in Elementary English, Elementary Math and Leadership.
I have really enjoyed working with children. I believe that each child has a special way that he or she learns best. My goal is to find the learning style that best suits the student so that they can better understand the material. I have found that children learn best through being hands-on, it allows them to understand how things work, instead of memorizing the subject matter. My goal is to teach students so that they are better able to g ... read more

I have earned a bachelor degree in Middle School Level Education, with focus on English. For the last five years I have taught at the middle school level. Three of those years were spent teaching intensive reading. It is proven that the older the student is the more difficult is to teach him to read. My personal goal is to prevent life-long struggling readers.
In my teaching, I have integrated different teaching styles and methods depending on the subject matter. The students that I have taught come from ethnically diverse background. My ultimate goal is to reach the unreachable student.

College students are difficult to work with because they think they know it all. This was a blessing in disguise because it taught me not only to learn different ways to tutor a student, but also to figure out through body language and little signals as to whether or not they were actually comprehending the information. Teaching is not just giving information and hoping they retain it. My teaching style consists of teaching, asking questions to ensure they know or understand the material, and exercising hands-on work and examples to ensure the student can apply what they have learned.
I love the written word and reaching people, so I ultimately chose to major in journalism. My love for teaching and instructing students led me to pursue my minor in education. In the past three years, I've tutored undergraduates in writing (grammar, composition, etc), graduate students (editing these ... read more

I have been a substitute teacher for the last 25 years in different areas of the country where I have moved. I home-schooled my 2 children for 12 years mostly when I lived in Alaska. My strongest area of teaching is in English, and taught high school English as a full-time temporary position for a teacher on pregnancy leave. I want your child to enjoy learning, and will structure tutoring time to showcase the benefit of what we are working on. Every child has their own pace, and wants to succeed. It won't do any good for me to tell them how; they must discover it and own it. I am easy to work with, have a good sense of humor, and am patient.

More About This Tutor...

Coming from a family of educators, I knew from an early age that I would become a teacher myself; therefore, all the steps taken to prepare for my professional life have been to enable me to be the best teacher I can be. I received both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of South Alabama. I received classroom teaching experience at a local middle school and as a university instructor. I currently have an extremely rewarding position with the Mobile Housing Board developing, coordinating, and instructing GED preparation classes. With this program I teach GED concepts and both group and individually tutor numerous students. I take pride in the fact that 100% of the students I referred to the official GED test obtained their GED. Unfortunately, the grant I work under has expired, and I will now explore more opportunities in the world of education.
