I began tutoring in sixth grade when I voluntarily gave up my lunch recess each day to help in a first-grade classroom. I continued to tutor my peers in high school. After I graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, I was chosen by the Mayor of Bremerton to teach English in Japan for three years. Upon my return to the United States, I immediately went back to school for my teaching certificate in Elementary Education. As a Social Worker I came in contact with young adults who have dropped out of school because of becoming young parents, drug use, and or a lack of support from parents. My initial contact was to address child abuse and or neglect but I quickly recognized the bigger picture included their inability to process information because of a lack of education. I started a parenting class to give them a safe place to start looking at these issues.
I teach so I can empower the individule to create a goal that can be attained. I have a stregth based approach, which gives the one I am teaching a positive outlook at what they can achieve.
