A Little Bit About Me...

My original degree was in English with a minor in Spanish. I received my teaching certification in 1979 in Secondary English/Spanish. I taught adult ESL part time for 2 years in the evenings. After a taste in this field, I began teaching in ESL and have taught 9 years in public schools. With one school district I also had a class helping students with the English part of the TAAS test. During the rest of my career I taught Spanish which was also 9 years.
I believe the first thing you need to do is to find out what the student needs help with. At times I have used music, poetry, or computer programs to get the students attention. Repetition is very helpful and note cards are good for memorization. Taking notes is a good way for the student to stay focused. A little comedy helps too to help students to remember. I have found through my most recent teaching and tutoring opportunities that all children have the capability to learn. Some just need that one-on-one assistance in order to succeed. I believe in hands-on learning that provides students of all learning styles with the opportunity to excel. I also believe in discussion as another means of learning through the method of Socratic questioning for all levels of English learning. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is one in which I strive to engage students in the subject by both instructing and challenging them to think on their own. I also strive to accomplish this goal in such a manner that the student experiences the fun that is a part of learning, but one that also emphasizes the importance of the learning process as well. In all of my tutoring and teaching experiences, I communicate how critical good study habits are: self-discipline; finding a quiet place to study; punctuality; attention to detail; following the rules; etc.
