A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working with preschool to high school age students since 2004. I have always had tutoring positions, whether it was for my peers in college, volunteering for the Salvation Army, or running after school programs after graduating. I am a PA certified tutor, with conflict resolution, mentor, and CERT training (Community Emergency Rescue Team). It is important to me to have a profession where I feel that I am helping other people to progress in their lives. As an online graduate at Kaplan University, I quickly became aware of my priorities. Students seeking help often emailed other classmates for assistance. I was often told there were very few students who responded to their emails; however, I was one of them. I earned my Associate degree through Allegany College of Maryland. I enjoyed this area of study so much that I decided to transfer to Kaplan University Online and continue my study in Business Administration with concentration in Accounting. I enjoyed tutoring college students interested in physics. During my two years of experienced, I learned that students use different approaches solving physics problems. With physics, I try to apply the problem to a real world situation in which the student would be able to relate it to in which will help them fully understand what is being asked. I found it effective to help the students understand the concepts rather than the problem they are trying to solve. My style as a tutor is more of a question and answer, in which I question the students if they are right and why they think they are. Instead of a instruction type of you do this then this approach. I am currently a mid-career scientist who is looking to transition into the teaching profession. I have tutored high school and college students for several years in chemistry, algebra, physics, and geometry. I have a BS in Chemistry and have taken additional coursework in chemistry and education. I have extensive experience as a chemist working in the laboratory, and have several published research articles in the field.
My goal in teaching is to help students understand how the scientific process affects them on a personal level.
