My first career was as a Registered Professional Nurse (NYS licensure) for 25 years. During those years, I kept up my interest in various fields of math, such as Abstract Algebra, Differential equations, and topology. I was especially interested in algebraically-capable computer math programs. I,eventually, went back to school for my Mathematics degree as part of a long-standing interest in and commitment to Mathematics. I presently teach students who are "at risk" in the 7th through 12th grades and have done so for the last 10-11 years at OHM-BOCES. I have tutored the NYS Math B course for 5 years as well as the current NYS Algebra I/II courses.
All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (th ... read more

I really enjoy tutoring. I have been told in the past by students I have tutored that I am able to bring the information to their level, helping them to more easily understand the subject at hand. I believe that anyone can learn and master any topic that they are faced with. With the right techniques and learning styles, I believe that any effective tutor can aid their student tremendously.
As an Honors Student at Utica College, and as a past tutor, I feel very comfortable in the teaching setting. My long term goal is to enter the doctorate program at Syracuse University so that I may teach at the college level in the future. My BS in accounting with CPA concentration has given me the knowledge and skills that would allow me to be an excellent tutor in the specific area. In the last five years, I have tutored math, accounting, macro and micro economics. As a recent college graduate ... read more

I teach with enthusiasm and enjoyment. A large whiteboard or table space for legal pads is a must. Students need to visualize concepts to grasp them. All errors are learning experiences, life is 'trial and error'.

My method of educating and teaching style derives from a simple philosophy that experience has the most profound effect on learning. Therefore I always begin my approach by identifying ways in with I can match demonstration to the particular personality of the individual I am teaching. I infuse experiential examples into the textbook explanations to create a more tangible presentation of the information. My objective is to get the student to connect with familiar ideas, emotions, and experiences. I have the ability to simplify and customize the information compatible with the learning styles of the individual.

A Little Bit About Me...

In college, I in part supported myself by tutoring in math and organic chemistry. I have earned a BS in Biology and a Doctorate in Medicine (but I am retired from clinical practice). My education has given me expertise in the areas of biology, chemistry, math and anatomy. I have supplemented this knowlege with self study in grammar and creative writing. I have won writing contest and have published many letters to the editor. During the last 6 years I have tutored students seeking to obtain their GED, in all subject areas.
Learning and teaching is my passion. In high school it ws teachers with the same passion that made learning fun and encouraged me to achieve academic success. A Little Bit About Me...

I started off college at Mohawk Valley Community College and earned a Liberal Arts and Science degree. I feel that all college students should be well rounded and should take a wide variety of courses. I then enrolled at Utica College to finish my BS degree. Over those two years, I took 18 science courses and most of them were accompanied by labs. It was stressful and difficult but it was something I was determined to complete. I thought I wanted to go to medical school, but later decided against it. Also during my time at Utica College, I conducted medical research with Aspartame and Omeprazole on mice. I spent some time writing these up to be submitted for journals. The instructor and I are on a hiatus from this project. I completed an internship with the Masonic Medical Research lab in the summer of 2006. I worked in the Molecular Genetics Lab. In the summer of 2008, I began working w ... read more

I graduated in the top ten of my high school class at Utica Free Academy. I had the highest mathematics average. I attended Williams College in Williamstown Mass and studied economics, studio art, and creative writing. Following graduation with a BA degree in 1981, I worked for two seasons as a substitute high school and middle schoolteacher. I covered math, science, English, and the arts, as well as phys ed. Eventually I got into international business as a overseas buyer. I am now retired from that work and look forward to the opportunity to resume teaching.

Having completed my B.A. in Mathematics, with a minor in adolescent education, a Computer Science degree, and graduating with a 3.65 GPA, and a 4.0 in content has fueled my success. Combining that with presently finishing my Masters in Teaching with Technology, three years of teaching mathematics and 5 years of tutoring experience, in which I tutored several subjects I feel that I have a lot to add to the success of students. To go along with my education, I have completed several science courses as well as Spanish courses. A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching, period. I strive for clarity in my presentation. This has allowed me to explain very complex ideas to adults as well as very young children. The mark of a good teacher is comprehension. Never is there a place for anger or impatience in teaching! It is the duty of the instructor to demonstrate why the subject is important and interesting. For example, I never enjoyed Math until a teacher in college explained it's value. It was not that we will necessarily need to perform those equations, rather it is that it trains our mind how to think well, much like mental gymnastics. Thus, I strive to find ways to bring home the subject matter in a way that connects with my audience.
In a world of specialization, I tend to break the mold by having rather wide academic interests. I earned a bachelors degree in Religion, then went on to earn an MA in Theology. In betwee ... read more

More About This Tutor...

For the past six years I have taught or tutored even while working on my own higher education. I have taught or tutored every age level between five and sixty-five and every skill level (including special needs), and though I am most comfortable with middle schoolers or college students, I like working with others as well. The subjects I am experienced in tutoring are: studio art (specifically drawing and painting); history; earth sciences; reading; writing (creative and compositional); English literature; art history; and conversational English.
I believe that there is no such thing as one size fits all teaching. Every student learns in a different way, at a different pace, and much of the fun for me in the process of teaching is improvisation: discovering which methods work best for each student. I believe foremost in teaching students to take responsibility for their own l ... read more

Both of my parents were teachers and I find myself sharing my knowledge with anyone who seems to need it. I have instructed the ladies in my craft group, answered questions posted online, and tried to instill some basic computer upkeep knowledge in the people who've asked me for help with their personal computers. I loved explaining the world to my children and I miss the joy and wonder of a child who has just understood something for the first time.
Although my BS degree is in Computer Science, I have taken (and passed!) courses in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Engineering - which means I have learned a lot of advanced math. My work as a software developer required writing "white papers" to explain and describe our software as well as test documents that would allow a person unfamiliar with our software to sit down and formally test it. As a teacher I realize that every student has a different style of learning, and I work to quickly understand the best ways to teach students in a one on one setting, generally using some form of self-discovery, depending on the subject. When teaching music I seek to help the student to learn good practice behavior and an understanding of where they fit in the the big picture of a music group. I firmly believe that children have greater potential than often recognized, and know that finding their passions and providing practical application provides for the best learning environment.
As a volunteer with the Salvation Army I have spent many years volunteering with children, teaching Sunday School and Band.
