I have always had a passion for math and science. This passion has lead me to pursue careers in areas that will allow me to apply my knowledge of math and science. However, while in these fields I discovered that I enjoyed helping and teaching others. So, after realizing this I decided to go into teaching full time. I have scored the open ended portions of math and science standardized tests. After being a scorer I moved into the area of educational training where I trained others to score tests. I find an interactive, Socratic teaching style in which I encourage the student to discover the answers on their own to understand why something works the way it does is a very effective approach for me rather than just lecturing, particularly for younger learners. I find it equally important for students to understand the why of what they are learning as well as the how and the what. I believe that students' multiple intelligences should be harnessed and that if students don't understand information presented initially, it is up to the teacher to find different ways of presenting the information so that the student can make it his or her own.
