Science is one of my top subjects! Master's Degree in Biology and Chemistry, 40 years teaching experience

I am pleased to have this opportunity to tell you a bit about myself. This is done in order to provide you with a chance to get to know me before we are assigned to each other. Thanks for your time in reading this entry. My teaching career with young adults has been over a span of 38 years. Some of my original students from the 70's are now grandparents in their mid fifties. However, I am still young at heart and still enjoy working with young people. My first teaching position was in a rural school locale in the middle of a farming region. Sometimes the smells that drifted through the air back then still haunt my memories. But, in that tiny little community where the principal would come to the staff lounge and eat tuna out of the can, I got my feet wet as a teacher and was on my way. In those early years I was smart enough to work on my master's degree, which not only strengthened me a ... read more

Making Learning as fun as possible.

I’ve had many years of practice in the tutoring field dealing with the fact that my brother has a learning disability. He likes to have fun and thinks that leaning is boring, so I try to make learning as fun as possible. Then I have my student on student tutoring when the students tutor each other. I think its better that way because most students don't really pay attention to their teachers but they take it better when it comes from another student. Sometimes its better because something you understand they may not understand and when you explain it to them then may be they will understand it a little better. Basically what im saying is that some kids learn better from other kids.
I prefer to have a fun learning environment. I think you learn from hearing, seeing, and doing.

My teaching style will depend on your child's needs. I have found that the easiest way is to make notes and practice problems to go over, then allow them to show me what they can do. With writing, I prefer that your child do a rough draft before meeting with me so that I can show them what they are doing wrong and how to fix it.
In high school, I was frequently the one that people came to for help. It was then that I realized I was extremely good at teaching. My senior year, I spent all day helping four different math teachers, one of which was frequently absent. In order to keep her class from falling behind, she had me make notes and go over practice problems with her classes. I spent quite a bit of my free time working on notes and worksheets, and giving step by step instructions to other children. In addition, I tutored other people who were having trouble for extra money. I al ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I'm a recent graduate of Rust College. During my years at college I tutored in subjects as biology, basic math, college algebra,English literature, and also was a co-judge for a local junior high science fair. During the summer of 2009, I did my internship with the Ronald E. McNair program at the University of Mississippi. This program focused mainly on research based studies with a chosen graduate professor.
I'm an assertive motivator. Learning should not be repulsive, children love to learn by examples that they can relate to. I find the opportunity to combine the likes and dislikes of the student and mold them into a constructive solution. Using metaphors and similes are more of my specialties. The style is strict, but the concepts are easier. When the task is completed, the student will say I was tough but with a caring aftereffect.
