As a tutor, I find that it is important to present the material to the students in a way that they can relate to. My job as an educator is to teach them how to learn it and make them want to learn it. I personally do not believe that negative reinforcement is beneficial. Positive responses to students are extremely valuable, even if they may occasionally give the wrong answer. This will give them the motivation to do well. My philosophy is that teaching is part knowledge, part communication, and part intuition. My intuition is necessary to understand where a student is getting stuck. I myself already understand the material; the challenge is to understand why a student does not. A variety of communicative teaching approaches is best. I have learned that different students respond to visual, auditory, or tactile methods. As always, continuous practice is extremely important. I also must ... read more

My comments on tutoring PSAT : I have tutored several students in the math section of the PSAT.

I think that I am very clear and concise in my explanations of concepts. I am also very good at explaining concepts in multiple ways. So if a student doesn't get how to do a problem using one method, I can go over another approach. I'm a good listener.
I have been teaching math since 8/2000. I first began teaching in a large urban district and then switched to teaching in a private school. I have taught math at both the high school and middle school levels. The subjects I have taught include algebra I and II, geometry, AP Calculus AB,and middle school math. I have tutored math every year that I taught, and also tutored GED math for 1 year.

For four years I taught in private schools, where I gave instruction at the middle and high school levels in English, French, Hebrew, computer programming, and office applications (spreadsheets, etc). I taught Math and English for one year at a Huntingdon Learning Center (elementary through high school students). Prior to this I taught French and Linguistics courses at the State University of NY at Albany where I earned a degree in each of those fields. Later I became a database administrator. Today I develop web applications in the C# programming language and the Transact SQL query language. I have also given private music lessons over the years to a total of 20 to 30 students. My teaching style varies with student learning styles. Although drill may be appropriate for some skills, my preference is project or problem based methods that draw on the learner's experiences and interests. I work from students' current skill levels, provide challenging problems, model successful learning skills, encourage students' to express creativity and intuition, and employ formative and normative assessments. I firmly believe that more advanced mathemtaics can be taught to younger and more diverse students. I believe that all students, of all skill levels, can learn mathemtaics if creatively taught.
I have spent over 30 years in business and financial consulting. My lifelong passion has been for mathematics and education. I have reached a point in my career where I can focus on giving back of my talents to students through mathematics education. I have minimal formal teac ... read more

My teaching style centers around the idea that every kid learns differently. Some understand pictures better some words. Either way someone learns, they stay focused through fun, enthusiastic teaching. Ironically I believe its not always a childs intelligence level that holds them back, its often more the attention the receive from teachers and the style that they filter through. With that in mind, I believe in empowering students to believe in themselves and get excited to achieve goals they never have before. I'm passionate about helping people become who they're made to be and that defines my style best.

A Little Bit About Me...

As the daughter of educators, I have been exposed to the education system all my life. As a result of this exposure, I became very interested in tutoring and teaching. I taught for two years as a substitute teacher before attending law school. I previously worked as a substitute teacher with Morrow Elementary in North Lauderdale, Florida where I taught test-taking strategies for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Most recently, I have volunteered with Youth Encouragement services as a tutor.
Based on previous experience I have discovered that the same teaching style does not work for every child. I find that explaining each topic and asking the child question gives a clear indication of their understanding. Based on responses to the questions adjustments may be made to address each child's need.

As a college student, I was convinced early that I would become a doctor or scientific researcher. About halfway through my college career, I decided that while science was interesting, people and world politics were much more interesting. Now, with a BA in International Studies, I have greatly improved my skills in research, writing, public speaking, teaching, and leadership. My knowledge base is broad and deep, and I am comfortable with the subjects of: Natural Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Ecology), International Studies (Economics, Politics, Conflict), English, and Psychology.
As my experience at college drew to a close, I found that the most rewarding activities I participated in were centered on education. I am a lifelong learner, and I love participating with others in the learning process. I set a relaxed atmosphere that fosters the students drive to ask questions and seek ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching, and I have experience working with varied age levels and learning levels. As a private tutor, I have also worked with many students who have varying learning disabilities, and I have used my knowledge to help develop techniques that help them learn too. One of my greatest strengths is my ability to express complex information to diverse groups of people in an understandable way. Everyone thinks a little differently and learns differently too. I practice patience and enthusiasm with my students. I work independently with my students to find out what type of learner they are. I create a friendly rapore with my students and use constructive criticism. Teaching through theory doesn't work with every student, so I often find ways to incorporate my students' interests into their learning. I believe that learning should be fun, so I always try to make my students laugh and en ... read more

Because I have an extensive background in Psychology, I have a strong understanding of the learning process, as well as many other factors that affect it. I focus on each individual child's strengths and use that to bring their weaknesses up to a higher level. Through patience and encouragement, I believe that most children can experience dramatic improvements in their abilities. I am able to explain complex ideas clearly, in simple terms that are understandable. Then I expand on what the child already understands until they have mastered the more advanced concepts. I first began tutoring during high school, volunteering with Time to Rise in Nashville, TN, a program that supplies students from underperforming schools with supplemental education. After high school, I excelled during college at the University of the South, spending time in Oxford at St Catherine's College, graduating summa cum laude, and being elected into Phi Beta Kappa. The liberal arts curriculum there provided such a broad education that I have maintained competency in nearly every subject. Such an education has come in handy during the four months I have been tutoring, as the students I assist will ask my help on subjects ranging from geology, to English lit, and to mathematics.
My own experience as a student has shown me that i was most effectively motivated when I realized the enjoyment I could draw from schoolwork. Approached in the right way, all aspects of the educatio ... read more
