I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. My direct experience is with adult learners. In my current position at USA TODAY, one of the largest newspapers in the country, I am heavily involved with technology training. Not only do I work with developing new training materials (from PowerPoint to video to documentation), I also do live classroom training. I tutored younger students for my college internships where I worked with fifth graders. Both short internships were fulfilling, but I ultimately opted to go to the corporate world.
I try to give my students the tools and resources they need to move beyond what they learn in the classroom. It is not enough that a student is engaged in the classroom.
