A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that learning should be fun! My goal as a tutor is not only to help students understand and retain information, but also to develop their learning abilities in ways that will equip them throughout their lifetime learning experience. I am focused on helping learners to discover their personal learning style, and then teaching to that style so that learning is at the same time creative, structured, and memorable. As a tutor, I invest the same effort into teaching as I require of my students in learning. I am patient, adaptable, reliable, and a great encourager. I believe that everyone can learn when they have the right motivation, and will stick with it until my student and I can uncover their motivation to learn.

If you looked over my resume, you would see that I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, a year of experience as an adjunct instructor at a medical career college and two years teaching English as a Second Language at a private institution. However, if you looked over my life, you would see that I have been teaching, tutoring and mentoring my entire life. I have volunteered as a mentor, a tutor, and a teacher in community organizations, in local schools, and at my local church; and I home schooled my own children. During my teaching career, I have worked with people from varied backgrounds, various ages, people from all over the world, and I love it.

A Little Bit About Me...

I thoroughly enjoy teaching students at various ages and stages of development. I consider myself to be very creative, and I try to give the students as much hands-on experience as possible. I am constantly seeking feedback from the student in terms of how well I am presenting the subject matter, so my methods of teaching will vary. I am always open to new ideas. Failure is not a word in my teaching vocabulary. I will always find a way to reach and teach my student in such a way that learning and application are maximized.

I have a great deal of experience training fellow employees and have devised the system of show them once, let them do it once while talking them through it, and then let them do it once without assistance. This system also translates to teaching. The last step is the most important; it forces the student to think for him or herself and instills confidence that the problem is not beyond his or her level of understanding. It is very important to teach students how to figure things out for themselves – probably the most important lesson I learned at UVa. If a child knows how to utilize resources such as the textbook, example problems, and the internet, then he or she will be able to work independently through a tough problem.
Education has always been extremely important to me. To me there is no greater feeling than finally grasping a difficult concept and I love helping someone ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of The Criswell College I have earned a BA in Theological Studies. I have also had extensive training in such areas as History, Science, Philosophy, and Theology. I am pursuing at this time a second degree in History from Lynchburg College and will be adding a Masters degree also. My experience in teaching all these areas plus others comes from spending over a year in South Korea teaching English, History, Science, Reading, and conducting seminars in other special interest areas.
My teaching style is a combination of different methodologies based on the needs of the person whom I am teaching. No one style will fit all persons but the main methods that I use are discussion (Q&A) and hands-on. I like to use visuals such as pictures, slides, and other presentation methods to make the history and or subject more interactive and mentally stimulating as well as memorable. I ... read more
