I graduated from Binghamton University (SUNY) in 2008 with a double degree in Linguistics (B.A.) and Neuroscience (B.S.). After working as a behavioral neuroscience research technician for nearly two years, I pursued a position in 2010 at Cornell University within their Behavioral and Evolutionary Neuroscience program. I am currently a doctoral student in Neuroscience at Tufts University Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, pursuing my dissertation research in a biochemistry lab studying GABA receptor structure and function. As an undergraduate, I was an enthusiastic student and often helped and tutored my peers. I began to tutor "professionally" my second year, teaching chemistry and mathematics to college students. I was chosen by my biochemistry professor to teach chemistry to a high school student who was a daughter of her personal friend. I was also encouraged by one of my professors to become a writing coach, which I never pursued due to the high demand of need for science tutors. After college, I taught as a temporary physics teacher in a public high school in Enosburg, VT. I taught physics, physical science, and AP physics for 4 months on an Emergency Teaching License.

I've been teaching since I was an 18-year-old Navy Hospital Corpsman in the 1970's. I tutored math, Biology and Chemistry during undergrad and med school and helped friends with the grammar for their research papers. I'm weary of dealing with managed care and am currently a little over than a year away from getting my Masters in Education.
I believe all children want to learn. Sometimes it takes some work to find the spark that ignites the learning process. Unfortunately, a larger classroom may not be the best environment to find that spark in some kids. I've been successful with both children and adults because I have a knack for finding out what motivates them. Once I know something about how a student thinks, I can better come up with concepts that will help her or him understand the subject.

In the last few semesters I've implemented through Blackboard some online testing, as well as tutorial "homework" quizzes, where the students get feedback directing them to coverage of particular sections of the text. I always try to make students aware of how the detailed, technical concepts of the moment fit into the "big picture," making references both to material previously covered and to material yet to come.
