I love what I do for a living. I love teaching and coaching and have always wanted to be a teacher. I believe all childeren can learn given the opportunity. I believe students have their own unique intelligences and learning styles. My role as a teacher/ coach is to identify those intelligences and styles and deliver subject's content using strategies that support those intellegeneces and styles. I also believe in helping students find the intrinsic motivation to work hard and not give up when subject matter is difficult. My style of teaching is to first get the student to understand the basics that are needed as a foundation. For example, my friend was having trouble completing accounting homework and I soon realized that it was because he had not memorized the basic equations; i.e., "assets - liabilities = owner's equity," and "beginning inventory + purchases - ending inventory = cost of goods sold." Just about impossible to advance without the basics. At Hartnell College I tutured math and economics. Recently I tutored a co-worker who was taking a college Accounting class and he appreciated it and said that I was very helpful. Communication has always been an interest of mine so I pursued a journalism degree and spent many hours in education to be an adept communicator through the written word. I also enjoy the person-to-person communication that is involved with the journalism profession. I have expanded my skills and knowledge through pursuing a creative arts career, as well. Before going to college, I formed the Oscoda County Youth Association with the goal of creating an organization that operated in the interests of the youth of the community. I believe that when students develop a certain level of self confidence, learning comes easier. I place great importance on a student's learning style. While at the California Science Center, where I worked as a science exhibit developer for six years, I learned the value of a constructivist approach to learning. I am not fixed on one approach to tutoring; I determine how a child learns and try to present the material in a variety of ways until the child "gets it."
