Humanities teacher/tutor

As a substitute teacher for social studies and English literature, in both honors and regular classes, I facilitated learning by following the lesson plans. Utilizing student-centered learning techniques, like asking questions and encouraging discussions, I helped create an atmosphere where learning became interesting and happened naturally. By promoting and stimulating guided discussions and critical thinking, I was able to inspire interest in the students for further study and research in a subject.
My expertise is in humanities. I combine original writings from ancient (Plato, Aristotle, Sophocles, etc.) and more modern (Shakespeare, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, etc.) authors who have shaped our world. By utilizing the Socratic method, I promote critical thinking and engage the student in discussion. My ultimate goal is to help the student not only learn and master the subject, b ... read more

If you don't like the results, I haven't done my job.

All I do is tend to my students needs. I'm personal. Like to get off track with my students and lead them back to the point.
I won the state championship in the 100 meters and went to Adams State College in Alamosa CO. Broke a leg in track and received withdrawn F across the board. Left college and healed up. Went to the Army two years and reserve three years. Came back and picked up the quickest degree possiable. Moved to Hawwaii, three years. Became a ciritified dept of defense government contractor. Furnish and deliver contracts. Ended up moving back home to Albuquerque NM. I started working in the Indian Casinos for 13 years. I bought a house and retired. But now I'm tired of sitting around.

A Little Bit About Me...

During the past nine years I have been teaching 7th to 12th graders in a WASC-accredited private school on a one-on-one basis. Beginning as a math teacher, I have also branched out to teach all social studies subjects as well as fine arts. Early on, it was my pleasure to have an Algebra I student complete my course with an "A" after having failed it 3 times. Prior to that I was a commercial banker for 22 years, which meant I sold bank services and provided customer service to Fortune 1000 companies. I have a BS in Mathematics and an MBA specializing in Finance and Management Policies.
I believe every student deserves to learn and succeed. I love teaching and working with all children. I believe all children can learn, but each in different ways. In recognizing that each student is an individual with innate talents and their own learning style, a teacher needs to customize teaching ... read more

My tutoring style comes for many years of working with students at all levels. The first part of my lesson is to teach proper breathing. Most adults and young students simply do not know how to breathe properly. I use a number of teaching techniques including praise for good honest work, excellent outside resources which can come from the internet or from books that I find in the educational stores and libraries. I am dedicated to my student on a full time basis even though I may meet with them perhaps two to three times per week. The student has my full attention and their lessons are instilled for their specific needs. I look for progress from the student and inform them as such initially. Every student is treated with respect and congratulated on their good efforts from the beginning of our studies together. The elementary student often receives flash cards pertinent to th ... read more

Straight out of college, I began substitute teaching and then tutoring individuals. I specialized in English, reading skills, history, psychology, and counseling. Now, I'm a computer tutor, a technical writer on contract, and gone through countless hours on training for these skills, and am now considering a second career as a teacher for non native speakers, for career and computer coursework, and always for writing skills, particularly technical writing. I wrote a book recently called Job Shark, to help people look for jobs, and I'm always amazed at how intimidated people are by computers and technology.
Personally, I prefer hands on - lab style workshops - than endless lecturing and note taking. I like to grasp the student's maturity level and aptitude and go from there. All students need individualized attention, but it is also important to have team building skills inherent in ... read more

During my years as a student, it was something I excelled at. I did not have to typically study for hours to achieve success in retaining material. I tend to remember things easily and be good with educating others on subject matter. I have been a substitute teacher and have mentored elementary through middle school age children. When I graduated college with my Bachelor's of Science in Criminal Justice, I was a member of an International Honor Society as well as one only for Criminal Justice majors and graduated Summa Cum Laude.
My teaching style would be classified as patient. I was diagnosed with a learning disability myself when I was in third grade, so I know how differently children learn. I was lucky enough to have patient resource teachers to work with and allow me to find my way of learning the material led by them, of course. So I think tutoring is extremely important for ... read more

I feel I learn as much as I teach. I value every student that I have the opportunity to work with. I have learned some students just need to overcoming their dislike of a subject. For others, a key subject building block had been built properly (as in Math) and as a result the rest of the information was sitting unstable in their minds. Finding where the support is needed and then working to solidify the skill then leads to greater confidence and greater academic achievement, Most students I work with appreciate that I am fair but firm. I want to succeed. It is a win-win.
I have recently completed my MBA at national University. I currently teach high school part time at a alternative high school. This recent experience provided me with opportunity to work with students in a one-on-one basis as well as familiarize myself with every core class offered in the high school program. I graduated from University of California Riverside and received my bachelor's degree in Mathematics. Not only I gain more understanding in Math, I also spent most of my time with my fellow classmates helping each other for our Math assignments in college. During the spring 2010, I tutored one student who is struggling in Algebra 1 and helped her pass the class.
I love Math, and I would love to have the opportunity to teach children and adults especially students from k-12th grade who are struggling in Math. My teaching style would be to teach Math as simple and understandable as possible. I would also make my teaching style to be fun but my priority is to tutor students to be successful in their education.
