"Half of knowledge is knowing where to find it."

Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.
After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.

I hear and I forget. I see and I remember.I do and I get it.

I believe that implementing the right tools, along with clearly stating what the student needs to learn, along with discussion, will ensure student success.Using multisensory resources, creatively using the newly formed knowledge, along with pre-testing will foster memory and recall.
The experience I have gained while studying Education and Psychology, along with administrating exams for Wonderlic Scholoastic Testing and tutoring has enabled me to learn through understanding, hard work and dedication. I have learned through extensive courses in Psychology on how we learn, education courses that break learning down, and working with children and adolescence for over ten years with tutoring and patience, that with the proper tools and guidance, anything can be achieved.

The knowledge you need to succeed.

Graduated Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1983 with a Major in Visual Communications. Have worked in Advertising Agencies, Printing Companies, Fortune 500 Companies. Have owned my own graphic design business for 15 years. I also teach Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign (and classes on how they all work together in the graphic design workflow) for 3 years at Hillsborough Community College.
After I find out what the student desires to do with the knowledge, I show the student not only how to do something, but why. Also show alternate ways to do the same task to allow them to do the one that they are comfortable with. After showing, I have the student do the actual work, helping them through it. Real world examples are shown, concepts introduced, real skills practiced. We move on when student is ready to move on.

If it can be fun, make it fun. If not, make it short.

My motto is if at all possible, I want to make learning fun. When that's impossible, let's get it over with quickly, so we can get back to the fun part. I'm a lifelong learner, so I practice what I preach.
Throughout my teaching and tutoring career, I have often found that I can help my students achieve beyond what was expected of them. At the end of this process, my biggest joy is to see my student successfully working on the tasks without my assistance. I've taught in public school and private school from PreK through 12th grade and even adult learners. Elementary students have learned to read. A high school senior learned to do basic math for the first time in his life. Homeschooling my own children was another such amazing time in my growth as an educator. I love sharing my knowledge, or even learning together with my students. One such case was when I coached a parent thro ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated in 2005 with a dual degree in mass communications/ emphasis in journalism and PR and a minor in Spanish, which is also my second language. While a student at the university I tutored in Spanish and also student taught at the local christian highschool for a semester. Having a degree in journalism has given me extensive grammatical skills. I have written dozens of papers, articles, and summaries. While interning at NBC 10 News in Philadelphia, PA I had the opportunity to write several press releases as well.
My teaching style has always been to make learning as enjoyable as possible. I believe that I am old enough to know better, but still young enough to know the current trends and also to remember things I did not enjoy while in high school. I believe the main thing most students dislike is lectures, so I would incorporate games and small projects into my curriculum. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In general, teaching a course as a virtual class requires more preparation on behalf of the instructor than in a traditional course. While in the traditional case the course starts with the first day of class, in a virtual classroom the course needs to start at least two to three weeks before the beginning of the semester. The lead time is necessary in order to convey to the students all the course-related information, to clarify any misconceptions, and to answer any questions about the mechanics and contents of the course in a timely manner. This usually takes the form of an initial welcome letter I send by surface mail to all registered students and follow-up questions I receive by phone and/or e-mail.
I love the Cooperative learning style which is one of the more successful and popular strategies. In this method, students are organized into teams, and each team has students of d ... read more

I am most comfortable teaching with prek-5th grade students, because that is my area of expertise. I love teaching these age groups because they are so impressionable and some of them still have that child like innocence that hasn't been stripped from them yet. My goal is to make all of my students feel safe and secure, but at the same time they should be getting an education not having to worry about their home life or what their wearing or who is looking at them. My goal is to get them to focus on the schoolwork ad realize their full potential which is outside of this classroom
As a college graduate, I was ready ti conquer the world with my BA in Communications, but once I begin to think about what I truly wanted to do with my life, I begin to also look into childcare. I begin at USAA Child Development Center for almost two years. I felt so comfortable with the kids and I relishe ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

While attending Mississippi State University I tutored 3-12 graders. I tutored them in mathematics, English, and science. It was quite rewarding for me to work with these students because I was able to see immediate results. Not only in their work but also in their behavior. I was able to provide each of my students with personal attention that was necessary in order for them to grow. In addition, it brought me joy knowing that I was helping someone; a child, to achieve their goal. Following graduation at Mississippi State I continued tutoring in English and other subjects as needed.
I love teaching and working with children. I believe that with love and nuturing each child can reach their full potential. My goal is to determine each child's strengths and to build on them. I will do this by getting to know each child on an individual basis - talking with them, conducting assessment ... read more
