I like to combine both direct instruction and hands-on activities when teaching. I believe that allowing students to apply their learning to real-life situations helps them to both find meaning in their learning and attach the learning to a memorable experience. I get really excited about the subjects that I teach and my excitement carries over to my students. A Little Bit About Me...

I spent nine semester at FMCC in the TRiO Student Support Services program. I began as a part time tutor and after one semester the program director saw it prudent to keep me on. During my time with the program I helped to establish several tutoring programs, one at FM and another at Amsterdam High School for the Upward Bound Grant funded program. In my spare time I do private in home tutoring for students seeking to improve their grades and become adept at taking standardized tests. Currently I am providing mathematics tutoring for the EOP program at Cobleskill Community College. Several nights a week I assist several EOP students at a time in courses like Basic Math, Algebra, Calculus, Statistics, and Pre-Calculus.

All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. For lower level students, I investigate with them the development of the linear equations involved in setting up a relationship between two factors. A higher level student would solve multiple linear equations. A height vs. time linear relationship then can become quadratic, thus involving sports as an application.
