A Little Bit About Me...

I have long had a love of learning, which has most recently expressed itself in my earning a BS in Psychology from Brigham Young University. This area of study gave me experience in the fields of math and writing, as I had to perform and analyze numerous psychological experiments, which includes performing statistical calculations as well as writing reports on findings. My teaching experience began in high school, where I tutored a girl in algebra. I also spent two years in Russia as a missionary, teaching people about my faith. While there, I also held weekly English language lessons open to the public. A Little Bit About Me...

As a Biology student at Brigham Young University I was hired to be a tutor in the Life Sciences Learning Center. I tutored college students with a focus on introductory biology, molecular biology, and genetics. I developed a rapport with students and fostered a positive and welcoming learning environment. Last April I graduated from BYU with a BS in Biology, and regrettably had to leave my role as a tutor. I have six years of experience in teaching dance, including tap, jazz, ballet, and ballroom. I feel that repetition is one key that helps students grasp difficult concepts. I start by helping the student understand what the question is asking. Then I will do a problem step by step, showing the student what I am doing. Next, I will have the student do the same problem, but recreate the steps that I had shown them, guiding them along the way. After this type of practice, we will move on to similar problems, using the same steps that we previously used. I have found that this system helps me learn the information and retain it. If the teacher's listening and communication skills are focused on the individual(s) being taught, the learner will let the teacher know when they are grasping and/or absorbing new material as well as when they(the student) reach their capacity. Though I studied Psychology while attending Utah Valley University, I spent two and a half years tutoring college students in English. I spent my senior year editing a scholarly journal for the School of Business Management. As a tutor, I helped students who were learning English as a second language to comprehend and properly use idioms and phrases in their writing, as well as helping them with spelling and grammar.
