I won several Grand Champion awards in Indiana's Madison County 4-H program for Baking and Woodworking while I have A's in Chemistry, Accounting, Biology, Spanish, Calculus, and many many other subjects from Ball State University. During college, I changed my major several times, taking numerous classes for each one to determine what I wanted to do with my life. I experimented with Political Science for two years, in which I took classes in criminology, speech, and history. My next year of college was spent in English and Writing, where I focused on the obvious, as well as classes in psychology. While working with an adult native Spanish speaker to improve her English was certainly rewarding, my desire has always been to work with children or adolescents, as I feel that they are more amenable to an educational program and have a greater learning capacity when given the proper opportunities. The goal of my approach is to enable students to have a level of ownership in learning concepts and ideas. Merely teaching the idea is not enough, and that "Oh, I see" moment must occur to embed the idea for long-term growth. I enjoy relating the ideas and facts to real world examples that almost anyone can grasp.
For a period of five years, I offered tutoring services to students at the University of Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. My ability comes from experience...I was not entirely prepared for college when I started, and had to work much harder to successfully complete my degrees.
