John N. - Des Moines, IA 50311 (17.8 mi) - Sociology Tutor - $31.50/hr.
I enjoy a very hands-on approach to teaching where students remain attentive through an energetic and lively approach. As a Senior in High School I spent a semester in Mettmann, Germany. During my stay I helped my host mom, who was also the head English teacher at the school I attended. I assisted her teach 6th and 7th graders and had the opportunity to head the classes on multiple occasions. She also volunteered to teach English to elderly citizens once a week, which I also filled in for her when she had schedule conflicts. It was a terrific experience which demanded constant adaptation and patience.
After finishing up 4 years of German from Ames High School, I began my studies at ISU. I took 2 or 3 German classes every semester. Classes varied from early 1900's literature to German films.

Isaac C. - Des Moines, IA 50313 (19.5 mi) - Sociology Tutor - $40.00/hr.
I am a Ph.D. ABD in Sociology. (I expect to defend my dissertation this fall and graduate with Ph.D. in December. I can tutor/teach methods, theory, social problems, race and ethnic relations, intro/general courses, deviance, social change and development etc. I like to begin by ascertaining the level of the student. Learning is best achieved when the student actively takes part, remains focused, engages in dialogue about the material. If teaching a group I enjoy 'interactive lecture/presentation' and group discussion. I employ a variety of mediums (depending on the subject matter to help communicate material. Regarding one on one tutoring, the best method, I believe, is to work with the student to identify what are the concepts that they struggle with and explain/demonstrate these concepts from a variety of different perspectives. Teaching Assistant for Spanish 201 and 202 for two

My teaching style is that I believe all students can learn but that there are different learning styles and we must match the correct learning style with the student. At the elementary level I have 2 years experience as a K,1st and 2nd grade combined teacher, three years as a 1st grade teacher and 1 year as combined 1st and 2nd grade teacher. I truly enjoy teaching children and I know for a fact that each child learns at a different rate as well as a different way. I am sure I am able to accommodate all of these ways. It is up to the adults to teach children the productiveness of today. I believe that it is up to people like myself to do such a thing. I do believe that every child can and will meet their potential if were are to give them the correct learning experience. I have and will continue to strive to make a difference in the lives of all my students. I have earned a bachelor degree in mathematics. Jesse M - Waukee, IA 50263 (19.7 mi) - Sociology Tutor - $37.00/hr.
As an Iowa State graduate, I was very driven to not only achieve a great education but to actually learn the material set forth by my professors. At Iowa State I started with as a sociology major but throughout my career I was able to find additional interests and ended my tenure at Iowa State with a degree in Sociology and Political Science, with minors in Criminal Justice and Philosophy. Throughout these studies I have learned that basic logic can get around many of the learning impediments that individuals have. By getting on the same page with your students I believe that you are better able to relay the information to them in a way that they better understand. In my year of tutoring I have tutored students in Math, Sociology, Political Science, English and Philosophy. I enjoy teaching with individuals of all ages. I believe that every person should learn something new everyday and

Lisa S - Iowa City, IA 11111 (28.5 mi) - Sociology Tutor - $38.00/hr.
I believe in setting goals and working to ensure they are accomplished. In my opinion, learning should never feel like a boring chore. The student should be working hard, but enjoying him or herself in the process, and this is when the most efficient and effective learning occurs. I work to impart certain values in the students I serve, including: fortitude, imagination and pride. While I earned my bachelor's degree in communication from Loyola, I also worked as an Academic coach for high school students. I spent a year tutoring students for an academic competition that tested all skill areas including, writing, math, history and science. I spent the summer of 2006 working closely with people with disabilities. I perfected my teaching skills through hands-on learning/teaching techniques.
