Certified Public Librarian

After six years of social work experience as a caseworker for Westchester County Department of Social Services where I worked extensively with families and children with special needs, I returned to college to receive my Master's degree in Library and Information Science. In 1978 I started my librarian career at the New York State Library, as a reference librarian specializing in the humanities, social sciences and legal research. I soon became coordinator of staff training (for a staff of over 200), both organizing and teaching classes in many subjects, and was liason with the New York State Data Center and Census Bureau. My interest and love of teaching and working with people led to having responsibility for overseeing the SUNY internship program, providing guidance and training to students. A Little Bit About Me...

I was taught to teach by "Socratic Method" which is possibly the best way to teach/tutor. I ask many questions to check the students responsiveness and understanding of key areas of the topics including a reinforcing of the ideas being learned. I cannot count how many students I have had come in frustrated and confused and then quickly answer questions that were simple and built up to understanding harder ideas by the end of a session. And the best award of all is seeing joy and elation that they have a good chance of getting a high grade after learning material. "Socratic Method" is the best proof a tutor can see that a student is learning and has learned what they have been taught.

I love and respect all children and try to meet them where they are. I am very perceptive at times and don't give up easy. If one thing doesn't work, I'd try another. I believe in good education that develops the person, not just prepare them to contribute to society and to make a living.

I believe all children are creative and eager to learn. I enjoy the challenge of unlocking the avenue to their learning style. All children can succeed if given the tools for their personal style. As an educator I consider this my primary task. All learning comes naturally from that point on with effort and guidance. My strong points are patience, understanding, creativity, and life long learning as an adult. I think the last point is extremely important as a tool for modeling the younger generations. This creates a relaxed instructor/student repoire while setting high unspoken expectations.

My BA. degree is in economics with a minor in business, I’ve completed some courses in graphic communications and have taken psychology on a graduate level. I’ve also homeschooled my own son for a year. He recently posted a 4.0 GPA at FMCC.

I am a firm believer that all children can learn if given every option to be successful. In order to achieve success, students should be surrounded with tools to help them learn and a positive learning environment is key. Teachers should not expect all children to learn at the same pace nor same learning style. I never give up on my students. Students need teachers who do not accept failure and teach perseverance.
