My primary goal is to help the student understand the material so that it makes sense. My tutoring style involves asking lots of questions. The answers to these questions enable me to determine where the student's difficulties lie and how to address them. I don't believe that telling someone a fact or algorithm or the answer to a problem has much lasting value, so I attempt to lead the student to her or his own understanding by a series of carefully structured questions. I believe in teaching to the student’s style of learning. If convention works use it. Picking up on a student’s interest and intergrading the educational experience is essential. In other words if a student is interested in horses, the classroom should be moved to the barn. If math is the subject in question then measuring food would be an excellent way to learn fractions. In the past I have written several programs for my sons to use to learn both math and spelling. I find the instant response from the programs was a very effective tool for them to learn. They were more willing to study as they could use the computer.

No two children are the same, and we know that this is correct, so therefore it applies to their learning ability as well. Some children need visual simulation to really ingrain the principle that is trying to be understood. While other's learn by complete repetition. I think that teachers need to be flexible, and be willing to adapt their teaching style to suit the needs of their students. This is especially true for tutors who are often involved in a one-on-one relationship with those they tutor. I'm patient and respectful of the difficulties students have with expressing their thoughts in words. It's not unusual that they get frustrated trying to fit them into what can seem like a formal and obstuctive grammatical framework. Math is also a subject with which people often have difficulty. Being empathetic to their struggles helps to overcome them. My experience has been that most who struggle with it do pretty well with math if they make the effort.

In my experience, the most important thing to remember is that all students learn differently, and sometimes what seems like an impossible task just needs to be presented differently for better understanding.
