My old next door neighbors have two children. One is a boy in elementary and one is a girl in middle school. I tutored the boy in reading and writing. He was able to read his first book on his own after a few weeks with me. I had to tutor the girl in math. she was taking algebra and was having a tough time with it. In two weeks of many meetings, she was able to pass her final exam. No matter what grade I was in, I always enjoyed going down to the ESE room and helping the special kids. I did what ever I could to help.

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience, (both academic and work)has been widely varied, ranging from research and engineering to financial management in a corporate environment, followed by golf course design and landscape management. In addition I used my experience in construction and woodworking to build and market patio furniture. Unfortunately the housing depression of the mid 2000's caused the business to be non profitable and was closed. Since 2005 I have been semi retired and used my construction experience to work at a lumber and hardware store.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching experience has been both formal and informal. I’ve been a teaching assistant to college undergraduates, an instructor in management studies and also an instructor for dog obedience classes (you’re really teaching the owner, not the dog). My informal experience has been with my kids, helping them with homework and as a scout den leader and a coach for baseball and softball, and now with my grandkids. In my professional life, I brought new products and services to market which involved educating and orienting individuals and groups through demonstrating and teaching opportunities.
My teaching style is best described as adaptive. We all learn differently, some more so by doing, others by seeing or listening, and others by thinking it through. Learning is a combination of processes, emphasizing what works best. For me, the approach is to use what works best for ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught for 8 years in a Title 1 Elementary school in North Fort Myers. The population was and still is over 90% free and reduced lunch. I taught 4th and 5th grades for 4 years and then taught science as an exploratory to all of the students for 4 years. I developed my curriculum for all grade levels in science, connected them to the building block and Sunshine State Standards, and created assessments. Currently, I am teaching Life Science to 7th graders at a Cape Coral middle school which is 5 miles form my home. I taught Science for 6th, 7th and 8th ESE students who had learning disabilities there for two years and ESOL students last year.
I like to teach science because it gives me many opportunities to teach using my preferred styles. I like to use cooperative learning, have the students investigate questions, and use hands on activities with real world examples. I try to bui ... read more

I have been teaching for six years. I currently teach third grade at Edgewood Academy in Fort Myers, FL. I hold my professional teaching certificate in Florida and I am a highly qualified teacher. I am currently a doctoral student at Novasoutheastern University. The focus of my research is on reading.

I take the time to learn about my student's interests and background knowledge so I can tailor my instruction to each student's needs and interests as much as possible. I also believe in adding fun and humor to learning, which has made the learning experience a very positive one for my students.

I feel that I am a natural educator. I often find my self teaching people simple tasks at work, or being called upon by friends and family members to assist them, or their children with their homework. I like to keep learning fun and interesting for all students. I believe that if you invoke an emotional response, like happiness, when you are teaching something, the pupil is much more likely to retain the information.
All through high school and college I was a tutor. I have taken numerous writing extensive courses. This qualifies me to tutor English. I have also taken many courses that concentrated on Social Studies. Science was always one of my favorite courses in high school, therefore I took a few science courses in college as well. I have previously tutored students in test preparation, and I have taken the FCAT myself. Math was another strong subject of mine, and I have also ... read more

I believe all students can learn. We have to meet our students at their learning level and interest level. When we teach our students above their learning abilities it creates frustration and poor self-image. I believe students should be offered choices in their education to give them ownership of the learning process.
I earned an undergraduate degree from Ohio State University and a Master's degree in Special Education from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. I taught for the Priceton City Schools district in Cincinnati for 31 years.I taught mostly middle school in the areas of math and special education. I taught remedial math with our alternative school for "at risk" students. I also taught classroom management classes and special education classes for the Education Department of Xavier University. I love teaching all ages, nearly all subjects. I understand that everyone has different styles of learning. When teaching to a group, ideally all styles would be touched on (auditory, visual, hands-on). When working one-on-one, though, it is possible to teach towards that individual's particular style of learning. This works so much better than a one-size-fits-all method of teaching. If one way of teaching isn't working, I search for a different approach, until I find one that works. I try to explain concepts using ideas and terms that the student is familiar with. This allows the student to relate new concepts to already familiar ones, which helps it 'stick' better. I love 'aha' or 'lightbulb' moments - it makes it all worthwhile!

My first work experience began with counseling Severely Emotionally Disturbed children and their families. In this capacity I worked with the schools in order to enable the students to see the value of education and to work through their personal problems in order to be successful in the school setting. I have been a teacher/trainer for 12 years in the Lee County school system. The levels I taught included diverse populations of middle and high school students. Most of my classes were comprised of ESE students and in fact there were several years that I concentrated on Severely Emotionally Disturbed students in a special program. Throughout both of these careers I have been extremely successful in establishing rapport and trust with these children and have been triumphant in motivating this population to care about themselves and their education. My passions are teaching ... read more

My teaching style is very similar regardless of audience: get them involved. I use creative exercises, current events, and varied instruction styles to keep the learning environment dynamic. My experience has taught me that learning is more about facilitating and fostering a positive environment than it is about memorizing facts.
I began my teaching career while obtaining my Master's degree at the U of Iowa. I taught the entry Business Administration course as part of my graduate program. This included grading, testing, actvities, and coaching students. Once employed in the corporate world, I continued teaching within my corporate position, as well as in adult education settings with Indiana Wesleyan, Univesity of Indianapolis, and Indiana Tech.
