My old next door neighbors have two children. One is a boy in elementary and one is a girl in middle school. I tutored the boy in reading and writing. He was able to read his first book on his own after a few weeks with me. I had to tutor the girl in math. she was taking algebra and was having a tough time with it. In two weeks of many meetings, she was able to pass her final exam. No matter what grade I was in, I always enjoyed going down to the ESE room and helping the special kids. I did what ever I could to help.

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience, (both academic and work)has been widely varied, ranging from research and engineering to financial management in a corporate environment, followed by golf course design and landscape management. In addition I used my experience in construction and woodworking to build and market patio furniture. Unfortunately the housing depression of the mid 2000's caused the business to be non profitable and was closed. Since 2005 I have been semi retired and used my construction experience to work at a lumber and hardware store.

My teaching experience has been both formal and informal. I’ve been a teaching assistant to college undergraduates, an instructor in management studies and also an instructor for dog obedience classes (you’re really teaching the owner, not the dog). A Little Bit About Me...

I taught for 8 years in a Title 1 Elementary school in North Fort Myers. The population was and still is over 90% free and reduced lunch. I taught 4th and 5th grades for 4 years and then taught science as an exploratory to all of the students for 4 years. I developed my curriculum for all grade levels in science, connected them to the building block and Sunshine State Standards, and created assessments. Currently, I am teaching Life Science to 7th graders at a Cape Coral middle school which is 5 miles form my home. I love teaching all ages, nearly all subjects. I understand that everyone has different styles of learning. When teaching to a group, ideally all styles would be touched on (auditory, visual, hands-on). When working one-on-one, though, it is possible to teach towards that individual's particular style of learning. This works so much better than a one-size-fits-all method of teaching. If one way of teaching isn't working, I search for a different approach, until I find one that works. I try to explain concepts using ideas and terms that the student is familiar with. This allows the student to relate new concepts to already familiar ones, which helps it 'stick' better. I love 'aha' or 'lightbulb' moments - it makes it all worthwhile!
